Their first album was weak. The follow-up Trespass does not yet have Phil Collins or Steve Hackett but is one of my favourite Genesis albums. I think it's excellent, though a bit darker than the next few albums.

The other early albums had the classic Gabriel/Hackett/Rutherford/Banks/Collins line-up:
Nursery Cryme
Foxtrot
Selling England by the Pound
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (this album is "Enossified" so it sounds quite a bit different to the previous three, it's an anomaly in their discography)

After Gabriel left the band took on the similar-sounding Phil Collins on vocals, toured with a different drummer and at first kept going as if The Lamb never happened. Song-writing in Genesis was a collaborative effort and the transition into dance muzak (going from A Trick of a Tail to the self-titled album) was very gradual.

Yeah, I have the first album "from geneis to revelation", I thought some of the songs sound alright. But yeah, I will end up trying to collect all their best albums! :P

There are a few good songs on that one but the production is still rubbish. I particularly like "In the Wilderness" but that was cut short before the band could cut loose and jam a bit like they did on Trespass.

I can see the case for this but I found a lot of it kind of entertaining in a ridiculous sort of way, unlike Requiem.

Is Trespass the second album?
