i guess the most advanced guitarist in recorded history is jimi hendrix. but his talent comes from his right brain and is spiritual, and i can not see it clearly. i can see the perfection and color of his songs and playing style, but i am lost when someone explains the spiritual meaning of his music.
i think he is kind of a conduit between "here" and "transcendent" music, but it is all just conceptual to me.
i like "earth blues" (studio version) and "long hot summer night" the best among his songs.
i also like "the wind cries mary" and many others too.
they are biblical in their essence (i feel remotely).

my favorite "guitarist" is actually my favorite musician, and that is frank zappa.
he wrote stuff that is so correct, and yet not similar to any other music on earth.

his assemblies were so complex, that they often sound dumb to the average listener.
his employment of poly-rhythmic arrangements, and their sudden alterations into new rhythmic structures, were exceptionally difficult for the musicians he employed to perform.

only the most gifted musicians got to play with him. they had to be untethered by common conceptions of repetitive music.

zappa was never fully serious with his music, and that makes it more poignant. it seems he was feeling comical during his musical exploration on many occasions.

there is not much good on youtube to link to, but this clip is interesting.
it shows a rehearsal of a piece of music he wrote, and you should note how difficult the rhythm is for those musicians to follow.

when the piece is finished being rehearsed, he shuts them off summarily (because he is the composer) and i can hear some people want to keep playing, and he is very professional not to be drawn into idle "jamming".

there was no "jamming" in zappa's songs. every note every one played, they read from a manuscript that he wrote for them to play.
if they got notes wrong he was not happy.

some people like "steve vai" and think he is the best guitarist.
they may be correct.
zappa employed him as a guitarst.
vai, in my opinion had a more westernised sound, and it is sometimes relieving to hear him start to play, but he quickly runs out of ideas, and he winds up creeping up his frets into super high notes. he seems to choke himself off because he has reached his "maximum imagination" point.

zappa plays endless colors and he has imagination far beyond vai's in my opinion.
here is a song between them. it takes a few minutes for them to get to serious guitar playing.
every note that everyone plays in the song was written by zappa (except for steve vais "virtuoso" segment).
the song is about stevie vai anyway, but i think zappa steals the show when he gets going.

Satriani's cool, I like John Frusciante from the Chili Peppers, Tony Iommi has some awesome riffs, same with Jimmy Page. Kirk Hammet from Metallica, Kurt Cobain, and Eddie van Halen are awesome too.

Some that people have heard of, and others that people haven't really heard of. Unlike many guitarists, they all have very original styles.

My favourite by far is Frank Zappa. I have listened to several albums of nothing but Zappa's guitar solos, and I could have listened to more (and despite the fact that I'd rate them 10/10, those are actually among my least favourite of Zappa's albums, so that just shows how much I adore Zappa).
