I’ve watched that clip a few times now. Every time I watch it, my head tells me to be cynical. I consider almost everything on TV to be contrived and emotionally manipulative. And I almost always avoid talent shows in particular; whenever I’ve seen them before they’ve tended to alternate between sentimentality and embarrassment, and they tend to encourage this view that fame is the highest thing a person should strive for. And why should Susan Boyle’s unglamorous appearance make her singing talent so surprising?
And yet every time I watch it I feel a lump in my throat after she sings those first couple of lines. And that’s very unusual for me!
Took the words right out of my mouth.
That Salon article was lovely. The interview with her and the Broadway singer made me want to punch the interviewers
