I think that it is possible for an Aspie to write. I write and I myself have found that social interaction within my stories is often off. I have a few good friends read over my work and then they lend me advice on how to improve those areas. I think that even within the last year or so I have improved.

I had the same problem. I had several friends read the book before I published it. They are extremely different types of NT people (for instance, one friend is a conservative ex-Vietnam combat veteran family man; another is a ultra-liberal artist activist and both she and her husband live in two separate houses down the street from each other since day 1). It's good to get other points of view as to how they might interpret things.

Any point of view can be useful. Some NTs can understand or enjoy the different ways we can process things. They just never would have thought about something that way first, or ever.

Btw, LittleRaven, I am an absolute Poe freak! So many people down here in Florida aren't familiar with Poe! He is immensely popular in Baltimore (we have the body!). The Ravens football team was named from the poem, even the color purple is the color mentioned.

My problem is that I have a lack of social experience. I can't imagine a world where people go out more than me or what they do. I wrote a novel, but my characters were quite philosphical and didn't do much. I don't know if anyone would read it. Once of my friends did and he seemed to enjoy it because he felt like he learned more about me through it. My poor protagonist, when she does go out, tends to get herself mis-understood, doesn't recognise social cues and feels really lonely. I wrote this before I knew what Aspergers was. It all fits into place now.

I use alot of dialogue to tell the story. I was typing one day at work and I went away at lunchtime someone I know noticed it on the screen and started reading it. It was only 1 chapter, but I came back and he asked whether I was writing a play.

Off-topic: Hey Animegirl, is that Cain Hargreaves on your avatar? He's so gorgeous. I'm a fan of Godchild.

On-topic: I'm currently promoting my children's book on Aspergers Syndrome called "Is Lydia Strange?" The book, complete with illustrations, is about a little girl born with AS struggling on her first day of school. The book is $10 and it can be found in Borders only in Maryland, PA, and New York City. If you would like a copy and you don't live in those areas, e-mail me your address and I'll mail it to you. The book will still be $10, but it will be $3 for shipping and handling.

I have written some science fiction stories before, ranging from short stories to attempts at a novel. Once, I left a couple of my stories on a table in my dorm commons room to see if anyone would say something to me about them. No one did respond, so I can either believe no one read them or believe that they were terrible and those who may have read them didn't want to tell me that. Though school, work, and even my hours spent daily on WP have deterred me from starting any new writings of purely self-interest (except for one, a fictional treatise on the history of an mid-Atlantic island nation), I have considered that in the future, after I finish my computer science Bachelor's degree, I might write science fiction as a career. I would want to "test the waters" before jumping into science fiction writing, of course. One of my concerns about going into writing as a career, that is, with the intent to make money off of stories that are popular, is the fact that in most cases individuals with Asperger's Syndrome have difficulty in social interaction and, although it is by no means a requirement of social interaction that there be social interaction between or among any of the human characters, in much of the popular fiction today by such authors as John Gresham, David Brown, Nora Roberts, Stephen King, especially, and etc., it does play a very important role.

A question I have for you all is do you think that someone with Asperger's Syndrome can become a successful author even with his difficulties in social interaction, which may be reflected in his writing, especially in the dialogue?

Another question: Does anyone know of any successful writers who have or have been suspected to have Asperger's Syndrome?

EDIT: clarity

I write myself, and I find that it's a lot easier to write social interactions than to actually have them.

I to enjoy writing. My poetry is alright, and have placed on WP. The thing is audience reception.
Some like what you write others hate it. That is the way it goes. Some like Hemingway others do not.
I wish you all good luck.

I feel that good writers are good observers.
I find that as an outsider I am able to observe nuances that go right by me when I am 'inside' a social interaction.
Surely if you apply yourself then the basic flow of human intercourse will be sufficient in your work, science fiction is hardly focused on the more subtle nuances of human dynamics or the human experience.
There are loads of great short story writers who have made this their area of focus that you could perhaps study for inspiration if you choose.
I myself have aspired to write at various times, my subject being that which confuses me most, humans their aspirations and experiences, the self same things I read most about.

Good luck, peace j

I enjoy writing but I'm not really good at it. It's just a hobby I do for myself.

I'm not too good with dialogue and all that, I write too much of it and it's always kind of boring, and it's "and they said and she said and he said" and there's hardly any un-verbal stuff it's just words words words. It kind of reflects real life in a way.
The story I'm writing now is about a group of aspies so I think I can get away with it this time

Because I was an adolescent diagnosed aspie, most of my traits through child, teen and early adulthood have been taught so I have been reading and I have exceptional writing skills. Its just ashame that the movie that I have so perfectly running in my mind isn't the same in real life, however it works fine for finger to key.

I've written at least 150 novella/novelette stories most of them are unfinished and I am currently between 2 novels (one adult and one tween)

It seems to be my gift in life and considering that most aspie's lead most of their lives in solitutude there is nothing better than your own story characters to keep you entertained :) I actually prefer writing than to people and sometimes animals.

Would like to go published some day.

Good luck to those who are all aspiring.

I'm a published poet and have my degree in English Writing. Much of my poetry is about the inability (or impossibility) of the poetic speaker to connect to others in a meaningful way. Those that aren't about disconnect are often about the significance of minute details. After I was diagnosed, I understood that reason behind my fascination with those topics.

currently rewritting it again. forgot a few, major details earlier on, especially space colonies, that and the fact im changing the mecha designs from gundamish to more along the lines of armored cores/mechwarrior mechs. (that is done more for the 'realism, since the gundam-types have been overdone a bit.)
