'Heart of Gold' by Neil Young strikes a deep and resonant chord with me. Sounds like an aspie anthem. I ain't saying it's proof or anything.

I suspect Bowie. Michael Stipe. David Byrne. And if Morrissey isn't an aspie, I'll eat my left testicle.

In jazz, yeah, someone mentioned Monk, seems likely, his music is way out. Also Sun Ra, his music is way beyond beyond, and his bio suggests it.

A bit off topic, but do any of you aspies especially appreciate music in time signatures other than 4? I remember hearing Dave Brubeck's time experiments on 'Time Out' at a young age and I just thought, this is my music!

all the rock musicians you mentioned here are prob'ly Aspie (in the case of Young, Bowie, and Byrne - CONFIRMED!!) Yeah, I suspect Morrissey's an Aspie too, but idk if it's been confirmed. As for Michael Stipe, seems a teeny bit peculiar but not so much I'd call him Aspie. He's an awesome musician though!! (my fave actually) - John Lennon and Iggy Pop are two musicians that I think have it and I've long suspected that they do - three more to add to the list are Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Kurt Cobain, and Beck (not to mention Mark Mothersbaugh and Danny Elfman)...and at least one (if not all) member(s) of Barenaked Ladies (and both members of They Might Be Giants) seem to have it in such a way that it reminds me more of how goofy and lighthearted my friends are than how cynical and frazzled my dad is (my dad is more like every other musician I've mentioned so far than he is like TMBG or BNL)

And no, I am NOT trying to diagnose EVERY rock musician with AS - for instance, I do NOT think that Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, and David Lee Roth have Asperger syndrome - they seem too "normal" to me (for lack of a better term)

Do you have a source for this?

Well, OK, Young is VERY LIKELY an Aspie (his son is, and IMO every member CSN & Y were Aspie - and/or something similar) - the other two are definitely confirmed Aspies - a couple sources confirm this though I forget exactly which. Perhaps look for interviews with them and/or their official websites.

It's sometimes thought Steven Morrisey of up tempo tune/ downbeat lyric Manchester band The Smiths may have mild AS, he never settled down with one woman, although he has had many affairs.

Some losers even implied he....wore the pink ribbon but they never read Wiki!! !! !! !! :)

I kept thinking Conor Oberst- I'm surprised you are the only one that mentioned him. I met him after a show once and he was just as awkward as I was despite his drunkeness.

Conor idk - seems more like he'd be bipolar than Aspie. Isaac Brock, on the other hand, does seem like he would be (similar sounding musician James Mercer of The Shins is a CONFIRMED Aspie!!)

I think i heard somewhere Jim Morrison was suspected of having it.

This might be a bit of a stretch. If he was, he was probably on the extremely high functioning end of the spectrum. For those more interested, check out this link on John Densmore's (Doors' drummer) discussion boards. I'm more inclined to think other factors would have influenced his behavior.

I also don't know about Stipe, either. He seems to be very shy, and occasionally was reclusive, but I think it would also be a stretch for him. Again, eccentric/weird/brilliance/genuis does NOT automatically equal AS.

But I do understand the desire to want to see our own traits reflected in those we admire. As much as I would love it if Morrison and/or Stipe (I admire both their artistry and their abilities with words) had it, I really am not sure there is enough evidence for either.

But I CAN agree with Syd Barrett, Nick Drake, David Byrne, and maybe Bjork. I notice no one has mentioned Nico yet.

Trent Reznor
Björk
Kurt Cobain
Marilyn Manson
Thom Yorke
Vangelis

I don't think Trent Reznor or Marilyn Manson do. If you read Marilyn Manson's autobiography you can get a better idea of the way he thinks. Definitely not "normal" but not exactly AS.

A musician when asked why the recorded output and the live shows sound so different replies that for the recorded stuff he goes into his room and puts down all the tracks for every single instrument used, then when it's time for the live show he shows the people who plays the songs how it's done, and this is why, he says, the live show and the recorded stuff sound so different. One could suspect such a person, particularly if his eyes wander off during interviews and has a reputation for fits of temper and his lyrics dwell obsessively on questions of isolation and alienation, not belonging, misunderstandings and that kind of thing. Every other song seems to be about hiding in a room and there's this death obsession also. During interviews he seems to not be prone to the usual posturing that people in this racket often do. I won't name the person as there has been no speculation along these lines about this person but it's just things I have noticed - also as a friend of people I know it would be awkward. I don't know if any of these things really make it justified to consider this person to be such a person.

From what I saw of him on his Grace Around the World DVD I would suggest Jeff Buckley. Who knows?

I think Matt Bellamy is an aspie.
