I'm not a big fan of hip hop either. Ironic, since I'm a fan of industrial music, which often relies on similar production techniques.

Same here. IMO, hip hop will never change because it's about the same subjects which in turn makes hip hop intolerable and repetitive; the subjects being cars, drugs, money, and sex.

There is more topical hip hop music out there, about things like social issues, politics, race, and poverty, but that's not what sells unfortunately. That said, musically it's still not my thing, as I tend to prefer music that focuses more on the instrumental side of things than the vocals.

Listen to Kendrink Lamar then tell me that's all that hip hop talks about. I one thing I would like to see more of in hip hop is more the instrumentation. A lot of hip hop songs use just a little instrumentation to showcase the lyrics.

^One of my friends is a fan of him, and he is indeed indeed a cut above other hip hop artists in terms of his song writing and lyrical themes. It may not be my type of music, but he has talent, and I recognize that. Eminem is also incredibly talented, though he did rely a little bit too much on shock value in his early days.

I do hate the fact the background music or 'beats' of most rap music can't stand-out on its own and exists purely to supplement the lyrics.

In general I dislike music that puts so much over-emphasis on the lyrics rather than the instrumentals.

Pop music does this too, but nowhere near as badly as rap does.

I want the lyrics to be a part of the puzzle that is a fantastic song.

To be just one element, one ingredient of the main course of the overall song, not just singing with a side-dish of background instrumental.

I often consider a song good if it can stand on its own without the lyrics.

Of course, many songs are designed to have lyrics, but honestly, I listen to a lot of instrumental electronic, rock, metal and pop and it all still sounds amazing even without the lyrics.

Rap however almost always sounds boring, empty, repetitive and lacking in diverse instruentation.

Here's an example:

The only potential salvation for this watered down, snorefest of a sound is 'Trap' music.

'Trap music' is basically rap and electronic fused together. Some trap music actually does have rapping over it.

Trap originally meant rap from the U.S. South, but nowadays the term means upbeat, faster tempo rap/electronic.

So trap has those key elements of electronic mixed-in that can make a song entertaining without lyrics.

I personally don't like Trap all that much, but instrumental trap songs are certainly far more entertaining than instrumental rap.

I can definitely tell this^ would still be more entertaining than most rap without the lyrics.

I hate Bob Dylan.

I don't think much of The Beatles either.

All good music was made prior to this millennium, especially in the decades 1950 - 1990.

also: country is one of my fave genres in music.

Based on how many fans they have I think this isn't that unpopular of an opinion.

My tastes may not be AS extreme as yours, but I approve. ;) I still listen to black metal and noise on occasion though.

Yeah my tastes are even more extreme than a lot of black metal fans. Much less people enjoy noise.

I like New Order a lot more than Joy Division, even though most of the lyrics are worse. New Order are playful. Joy Division--why so serious?

Pop Rock and Pop Punk such as Blink-182 to Simple Plan to a lesser extent The Ramones, are NOT bad at all.

They don't have any pretentions. They don't believe they are "high art." They are.....themselves.

Blink 182 is too processed for my liking. Listen to Shonen Knife, if you haven't already. They're really great pop punk, and don't sound too polished.
