French Impressionists Debussy, Satie, and Ravel have some of the most beautiful, surrealistic piano works I've ever heard. Debussy in particular had a very wide range of musical influences. You can hear Scott Joplin's ragtime influence in "Golliwog's Cakewalk," and Chopin's influence in many of his earlier works.
The Impressionists were huge influences on early Jazz composers. There's actually a classic interview of Frank Sinatra on the Johnny Carson show where Frank admits that he played the music of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy when he had women over at his place. Great taste, Frank!
I concur! I've always loved how they are so simple and yet still so beautiful, the Gymnopédies I mean.
