So far I'm digging a few of the bands I've been checking out.

I really like Curse of the Western Culture. I don't know if you listen to any Eric Avery outside of Jane's Addiction, but it reminds me a bit of Deconstruction, Polar Bear, and his solo record.

And Ghost Audio's really cool, but I got a soft spot for stoner rock.

A Prior Hassle is just plain good.

I'm not huge on Moaner's genre, but for a 16 year old kid, I'm totally and completely blown away.

Nothing heard actually sucks. I'm a big fan of all the minimalist ambient stuff, so there's lots of great things that I didn't mention.

So enough butt-kissing. Here's my stuffs:

My solo project in progress that will eventually become a concept album based on the process of reinvention.
Patient Sort of Fire

Me working with a friend.
The Porch Song

Both are heavy instrumental electronic experimental. For some reason "Old Ends, New Beginnings" says it's 13 minutes long, but it's only 6 and a half. I gotta re-record the guitar line, so I'll warn you that it's a little sloppy.

I am a teenager, and I was wondering, do all parents reject the idea of their children becoming an artist, no matter how talented or how determined they are?

My parents supported me on learning about music as a hobby, so far as buying me a guitar and paying for music lessons when I was younger, but nothing further. When high school was done with they only encouraged me to go for easily accessible careers. I am now an aircraft mechanic but have found myself unsatisfied that the time and effort spent doing that could have been put into education in music production. I have felt jealously toward those who's parents have supported them in their artistic pursuits. However, I am grateful that my parents set me up with a sure thing. In America, depending on what type of artist you wish to become, talent has very little to do with success. That, in addition to the multitude who seek a career in the arts, can make the field less fruitful. From a musical perspective, not every band will be able to put food on the table. In say, graphic design, there are some very nice jobs out there. With photography, it can be difficult to find yourself a productive niche. I encourage any artist to go for it, but only if they can with the whole of their will. If your parents wish for a different direction for you, it's because they care about you. But show them where your heart is and you may be able to sway their opinion.

Personally, I think my route through this world will set me up well. I make good money and continue to buy instruments and accessories. While I may not have the time I'd like to put into my musical aspirations, I do have the resources which is very important.

If you want to be an artist be an artist. It's a risky strategy in life. It is incredibly hard work gigging and touring and all the things you need to do to eke money out of your precious creations, all artists (even truly great artists) face rejection and criticism, and there's no steady stream of income.

BUT

There are those of us who will never be happy unless we are doing something creative. 8) Welcome to the club. Most musicians I know (the ones past the level of student) are heavily involved in teaching as a day-job. My guitar teacher is a great composer and improviser, he runs his own business (a music school offering private tuition in a variety of instruments) and does well enough out of it to fund his studio recording and release several albums.

Consider not only your art, but also how you're going to pay the bills. But it's possible to do both.

You'd be surprised how many people start out wanting to be musicians, but end up in the behind-the-scenes side of the industry. I've been doing live sound for almost 10 years now, I have just found my voice in music, and due to my contacts having worked with so many musicians, I have a good support base to start from. Live sound pays the bills for me, and I could make a considerable deal of money if I wanted to move up in the industry. I also considered becoming a Luthier before I decided to stick with audio.

Billy Howerdel- who is the driving force behind A Perfect Circle- started out as a guitar tech for Tool. He played some of his tracks for Maynard of Tool and eventually Maynard signed on.

Here is a link to my music project: Syrinxe

I only have 2 tracks up: 1 ambient and one acoustic guitar, but I intend to have more in the near future.

I've made a couple of pieces of music, I've been getting more and more into 'electronic' music... even though all my music is electronic. What that means is I'm embracing more of the synth sounds... and the intentionally machine produced aspects of the music. Before I was trying to make computer approximations of 'real' instruments.

I'm not really into electronic/hip-hop/dance music though. I've started to listen to old electronic synth music like Kraftwerk and Yellow Magic Orchestra... plus I love old-school game music in general... so that all has an influence.

Electronic Friends
Insomnia

Anyways, I'm interested in what people think.

My parents have always supported the artistic endeavors of my siblings and I and still do to the point where a large portion of their house is frequently occupied with gear for recording. It happens to be an extremely musical family. My Dad is a musician, and my Mom is an avid music fan (she is largely responsible for us growing up listening to alot of music and having an appreciation for it). My sister is going to school for music, and I'm about to go back to school for music production and engineering (my key interest). My brother is the only one interested in having a 'real' career, but he plays bass, guitar and mandolin. He's in a bit of a classic-rock phase right now, but I think that he'll grow out of it.

It's certainly a difficult industry, but luckily my parents are extremely supportive.

My parents have always been very supportive of all my creative endeavors. They are both artistic and musical. My dad can play any instrument he picks up but focuses on selling pianos.

They let me join a band when I was 15. I have been performing on stage ever since (and had been since I was around 11) My first main band didn't go anywhere. Our manager thought that we should get signed before we cut an album, but nobody wanted to sign us and not having an album made things all the harder so we ended up languishing for years playing lousy yuppie bars and never going on tour or anything. We did open for a few national acts, like Fastball and Dishwalla and Poe and whatnot.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUWpeSdi_Hc (this is us)

It has sent me down a very interesting path in life, i think. I may never be famous for my music, but I do help run an interesting multi-purposed performance and arts space where hundreds of acts, some famous, from all over the world have played...but we had to move and were shut down and are in the process of reopening..it has taken almost a year now. Hopefully we are almost there..

I am in an "ousider" Comedy band called Organ Failure, and we have actually managed to chart on college radio in a few places..If you knew my bandmates, you would understand why we toss the word "Outsider" around...

What was really fun was when we'd be on tour and all start melting down at once......and only one member this band can drive (not me)
um...

For the last several years I have been doing my goofy ukulele stuff..and i enjoy it..it is probably not for everyone...but I amuse myself with it. A lot of these linked below are live and improv recordings I made with my little digital recorder.

I have been playing music with my very good AS-ish performance artist friend and here is the link to his stuff and just a little bit of ours.

I've only recently started to create my own music, and I don't really have a specific genre, since it's so experimental. Anyway here's my profile:

www.myspace.com/celestialshoecrane

There are 4 songs up at the moment

Piano Improv - Basically what the title says. Just messing around on the piano.

Arid Sleep - Made this for fun, out of nothing but white noise and my voice.

Splooptune - Made this for my VCE media film last year, it's supposed to sound like music from a children's TV show.

Sadnesses - Also for my film, using piano and subtle vocals.

I think Water is a fascinating sound. I used a recording I made running the tap in my bathroom to make a piece of music. You can download it and everything.

Here it is.

I think it has a certain otherworldliness and oppressiveness... but it comes up for breath eventually!

I already said it on another thread but I'll say it again; that is totally beautiful, ManErg. :D Thanks for posting it.

my music page, we're called sketchs band, its pretty much just me and a group of studio musicians who i payed to do the instruments i dont know how to play that well yet (drums and bass) but the guitar, vocals, lyrics etc are pretty much my doing so yeah.

broke - basically this tracks one of those things that could be on mainstream radio, its pretty much a placebo song or could be (or so i've been told) meh.

my city - this is an solo cover, i dont know who did the original, pretty downbeat

heartaches and hangovers - probebly the result of listening to blink 182 and drinking too much, catchy and upbeat none the less
