Joni Mitchel. Emiliana Torini

That's all I can think of. I guess my music collection is sexist.

Indigo Girls
Janis Joplin
Amy Winehouse
Natalie Merchant
Sheryl Crow
Shirley Manson
KD Lang
Sinead O'Connor
Grace Slick
Judy Garland
Tracy Chapman (love her new song!)
Patsy Cline
Sarah Maclachlan
Stevie Nicks
Rihanna (?) I love her in that Maroon 5 song

OK - so this is more of a "best of" list.

Sadly, many of these women are dead or a little loony and burned out or just hanging out in semi-retirement. I think we're in kind of a dry spell for female singers.

There is a lot of GREAT music being made right now - but mostly guys.

So many great choices here that I like have been echoed. Oh well, here's another echo.
Natalie Merchant
Melissa Ferrick
Melissa Etheridge
Jewel ( before she went country )
Annie Lennox
Ani Di Franco
Anne Murray
Karen Carpenter
Christine McVee-From Fleetwood Mac
I like Stevie Nicks too, but Christine even better
k.d. lang
Indigo Girls
Joni Mitchell
Sarah McLaughlin
Sheryl Crow
Bonnie Rait
Paula Cole
Sinead O'Connor
Tracy Chapman
Patsy Cline
The woman from Jefferson Airplane-Grace Slick?
Joan Armatrading
Laura Nyro ( I didn't think anyone knew who she was until this thread ) :-)
Barbara Streisand
Bette Midler
Celine Dion-amazing voice, songs become too fake lately, weird on stage movements
Beth Nielsen Chapman
Natalie Cole
Dionne Warwick
Dusty Springfield
Shirley Bassey
Lulu
Amy Lee (Evanesence)
Roberta Flack
Dianna Krall
Bobbie Gentry
Janis Joplin
Joan Jett
Alison Krauss
The woman who sings with the 5th Dimension

Mme Le Pen: Sadly, I have to agree with your statement about the state of women's music. Really want to get Tracy Chapman's new album. I read somewhere that Natalie Merchant might come out with a new album this year or in 2010.

this is an australian 17 year old girl (at that time) singing "i am woman" that was originally sung by helen reddy. the musicians that perform this track are extremely proficient.
and i must say that amarosi's voice is powered by genius of effect.
i have worked with her and i know her somewhat.

Athena Cage: I've only heard her in one song by Keith Sweat, but her voice is effing awesome.

Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, not so much because of her music but the personality she had. Plus I had a crush on her when I was 12.
