U2 were always crap, but their recent material makes their old material almost palatable by comparison.

That might be pretty common, actually :) I think they've done some really fun music, but they're not "one of the greats," as they seem to aspire to being. Artistically, I think U2 is most successful when just making music and not trying to make hits, so I enjoy the Passengers album and Zooropa. They do have some good hits, though. If anything, I guess I find it perversely entertaining that they managed to synthesize elements of punk and post-punk bands who weren't very financially successful (Television, Joy Division, PiL), and become so huge.

I find it interesting how often an act, or a few acts will define a fairly innovative sound for themselves and go on to be influential, and sometimes even critically acclaimed, but not very popular. On the heels of that someone will come along with a watered down, more bland and generic take on that sound (often while missing the point entirely) and go on to get big and sometimes even get made the 'standard bearer' for that style by mainstream media - all the while continuing to not really 'get it' by the standards of the initial scene that spawned them.

To that last part, I would counter that, except for a couple of gems here and there, new jack swing was a very monotonous genre, producing interchangeable songs. My own controversial opinion is that R&B/urban contemporary music started to become interesting again by the mid 90s, when Timbaland and Darkchild were active, lasting until about 2003 when crunk became popular and all the R&B songs started to sound similar again.

Certain types of music sound good on laptop speakers, particularly Big Black or Ministry's "The Land of Rape and Honey". Laptop speakers give them really harsh highs which add to their impact.

I really don't get people's hate for Coldplay. They're the only band that gets regularly played on mainstream radio these days that I can actually stomach.

Get this, my unorthodox opinions.

- HOW the Heck did REM's "Shiny Happy People" got to the 100 worst songs ever list?? that's embaressing. The song is NOT bad at all, it's quite good actually and definitely does NOT deserve a spot on that list

- The Avalanches' "Frontier Psychiatrist" is a GENUIS song in my opinion especially the clip, which is one of the best I've seen - A+ combo. There. I said it. Bash me plenty, I don't care.

- Xanadu , Olivia Newton John. Awesome fun song.

- Duran Duran is NOT a boy band. I'm pretty sure a boy band is a band whose members can dance quite well, sing good with autotune and not play an instrument. Heck Duran Duran just had good looks, they were virtouso each in his instrument and I'm pretty sure non of em was gay. Wait, is it because they're all males? Because I doubt the beatles were considered a boy band as well if such.

- I like Italo Disco on my playlist. Modern talking are okay but too repetitive after awhile. There are alot of unknown songs there to explore in that genre on youtube - you'd be surprised.

- I prefer the Beach boys over the Beatles, seriously, each and every time.

- I don't like the Rolling stones... Foreigner are muuuch better for me, I actually seen em live once they are awesome only 1 original member tho (the guitarist).

- I like kitsch.... Everything ridicolous works, old clips are awesome. Drummers playing while standing up, Keytar weilding keyboardists, headless guitars, Midi synth axes, Simmons Toms and cheeky drum machines... funny sampling diva voices and grunts in songs is always a good touch. LOL. -"Science!! !! !! !!"

System was f*****g awesome.....tool I'd probably listen to it, but I'd be much more excited about a new System of A Down album.

Clearly you have not really dug into today's music, there is what's popularized by the media and then there is good music to....just doesn't get as much media attention.

It's a fun song and meant to be silly/stupid. I think people forget that. I definitely prefer it to the stuffy, self-serious "Nightswimming."

System is a great band, I just feel that some people ignore them because they've recieved mainstream attention and were (unfairly) lumped into the nu-metal genre, which they have almost nothing to do with. Not that I hate nu-metal, but SoaD are really their own thing.

Same, despite them becoming more 'pop-ish' they are still enjoyable. And their parachutes album is one of the best alternative/indie rock albums of post-2000s. It irks me to see them get put to the same tier as nickelback or any other bandwagon-hated band.

I think it varies with laptops. Mine has around the same treble as my headphones it's just low end which is inaudible. It does give mid-bass around 200-400Hz a nice 'pop' sound.

Laptop speakers don't get all frequencies right and have built in EQs, therefore are not transparent...

Monitors are the best, since they cover not only both sides (like headphones) but also the center.

Interesting, what's the purpose of the built-in EQs? My brother's lenovo laptop seems to have a good range, I tested different basses and a 70Hz sine was fine on it.

Most listeners don't like a flat, monitor style reproduction, that's why most consumer grade speakers are designed to boost the low frequencies.

Different speakers are voiced differently for different tasks; a monitor, a guitar amp speaker and a hi-fi speaker all have very different EQ response curves.
