The barbarian chieftain on the left owes most of his inspiration to the pre-Christian Germanic cultures of Northern Europe, although his blue woad makeup is more Celtic. As someone of Anglo-Saxon heritage, I feel a special degree of kinship with the Germanic and Celtic peoples, as they were my ancestors in antiquity. One little-known fact about Germanic societies is that many of them had a quasi-democratic institution called the Thing, an assembly where the community's freemen would vote for their leaders. Even today, some Nordic democracies have named branches of their government after the Thing.
The Roman Emperor in the middle wears an unfriendly expression because for some reason I've always gotten a "bad guy" vibe off the Romans and perceived them as the quintessential Evil Empire. In fairness, most empires back in ancient times could be cruel towards their enemies, but since the Romans fought my ancestors I must feel especially bitter towards them. If my Roman guy's skin looks a little yellow or orange, he's meant to have an olive Mediterranean complexion.
Whether or not it's historically accurate, the Afrocentric reconstruction of ancient Egyptians as Black African people has always appealed to me aesthetically, hence why my Pharaoh on the right (and all of my Egyptian-style characters in general) has a Black African appearance. Of course there were other African civilizations like Mali, Great Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia, but Egypt is by far the most familiar to the lay public and arguably the most influential on our own Western civilization.
