I dont usually appreciate certain hip hop songs unless theyre like years out of date. Like some songs that were popular when I was in high school, I've never liked them until now. I'm starting to enjoy more contemporary dance music ya know.

^This is kind of a random thought that popped into my head, but where would you place So Solid Crew in the history of UK hip hop? Are they considered to be influential to contemporary and later rappers, or were they just a one album fluke who attempted to sell out and quickly dissolved because of the legal problems of some of the members?

I'm asking because I keep coming back to a couple of So Solid cuts from time to time, and always thought it was a pity that their success was so short-lived.

On a similar note, and more of a question in general for the WP hip-hop fans... Does anyone remember Positive K? He had a hit with 'I Got A Man' off his album The Skills Dat Pay Da Bills (1994). I listened to it the other day and liked it OK. Yeah, there's a lot of swagger and bragadocio on it, and a couple of questionable lyrics, but his flow is great and his verses in general are pretty clever. With a name like Positive K, you'd expect that he'd be a 'conscious' rapper like the Native Tongues Posse, but he leans more toward the gangsta scene of the time. His album was produced by Big Daddy Kane.

I like hip-hop. Like punk, rap in the US has become a victim of its own success, and is now more about the marketing of a state of mind, and the clothes, and the slang than the music. Its a shame...

Wasn't really a fan of So Solid Crew to be honest although I only really started properly listening to UK Hip-hop around 06/07 so I only would've heard their stuff that charted, I remember Stig Of The Dump absolutely destroyed Asher D in an impromptu on-beat rap battle at Asher D's own gig after he said he'd battle anyone in the venue which was hilarious viewing as he wasn't expecting to get dismantled by an obese homeless alcoholic from Newcastle, that's what got me hooked on the UK battle rap scene.

Hiphop culture had a very interesting trajectory. It began as something which enabled political change but devolved into chauvinism and misogyny as well as the seedy crass side of human nature. There are artists like illogic and Saul Williams who try and keep that spirit alive. Splinter movements such as most of the artists on Brainfeeder some on Warp Ninja Tune 99%of the artists on Stone's Throw etc have also taken the musical core and discarded the rest often blurring the imaginary boundaries between it and other forms of music.
