I really enjoy Caspar David Fredrich. And this one above is one of my favourites. I forget its title, tho. IMO the best of the high-romantic painters - a hard line, crisp use of colour, doesn't get all gauzy and fall into kitchy sentimentality like so many others.

Got a chance to see some of his work at the Altes Nationalgalerie in Berlin when i was travelling through there some years ago. Very impressive in person. and surprisingly large...

Franz Kline

I came around a corner in a museum and was struck by one of his huge calligraphic paintings. I think it's the only time I have been that affected by a painting.

In general I like Picasso a lot and Lucien Freud. There are plenty of others but those are the first that come to mind.

Yeah, I think that period of Franz Kline's work is great. So much energy and emotion there. I like some of Kline Blue work too (in moderation...) it's like you can fall into the canvas. pure colour.

Well, there area a lot of good ones, of course, but the two that spring to mind are Georgia O'Keefe and Caravaggio.

I guess I'm a simple person to like O'Keefe when I shy away from more complex work. I figure I've got enough irritation without have to work at liking a painting.

But Caravaggio always struck me as the Renaissance artist who surpassed his contemporaries but was too big of a jerk to get much praise. Get a load of the skill of this guy:

I'm quite fond of this painting.

It's called The Swing and was painted in the mid-18th century. I don't know who painted it though.

It's also been used as an inspiration for the upcoming Disney movie Rapunzel.

That's by Jean-Honore Fragonard. I like it.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Can you tell more about that piece? It's so absorbing... I'm working on a painting in roughly that color scheme, but no way is it going to look like that...

Frida Kahlo
Madeline von Foerster
Louis Wain
Gustav Klimt
Alfons Mucha
Marion Peck
Mark Ryden
Fernando Botero
L. A. Ring
Renoir
Beatrix Potter (even though she didn't exactly do a lot of paintings, she did paint, and I love her works!)

There are so many amazing painter's out there. I should really visit museums and galleries more often.

oh, there's a couple for me
Vincent Van Gogh
Salvador Dali
Caravaggio (good call, irishwhistle! I've always enjoyed the lighting in his paintings)
Lee Krasner
Roy Lichtenstein
Hieronymus Bosch

I am always in constant awe of the street artist Banksy. My interest in him probably started when he did the album cover of Blur's "Think Tank" album.

I've always enjoyed the work of album cover artist Storm Thorgerson (who has done covers for artists like Muse, Biffy Clyro, Rush, The Cranberries and perhaps most famously, most of Pink Floyd's album covers including those for "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Wish You Were Here")

I don't know the name of the peice; just do a google image search of 'Beksinski' and it should come up. He has a lot of amazing stuff, with very dense detailing, and stirring surrealism!

I know very little about art but I love the work of MC Escher and Salvador Dali. Their stuff is so neat and out there it makes you wonder what planet they're from.
