...Just a point , my entry before was a gag/riff on the Ernest Hemingway line that was the start of all this ( I guess - I can't check now - the initial link says this ? ) , supposedly , once , Papa said: " The saddest short story in the world , only six words - ' For sale , baby shoes , Never used . ' "
So , in my bitchier mode , I did my riff upon it :P

I remember the sky that day.

Passing, her hand grazed his cheek.

A bare bulb lit the basement.

His breath kindled the glowing embers.

We'll leave when the snow breaks.

In the dark the phone rang.

The letter had arrived years later.

Taking the last sip of whiskey.

She swung and broke the bottle.
