Why else would he have done it? He was obviously doing it for someone.

That "world music" is something of a pejorative is a shame. Natheless, here's a favourite of mine:

I've been told they've cleaned up the public transport a bit since then. :)

That's strange, because it's a direct reference from the film. Maybe you heard it subconsciously somewhere. Great film though, as is it's sequel.

(Wondering off topic a bit, this is about music, not film.)

You do realize that phrase didn't originate from Wayne's World, don't you? :P

No, I didn't. Please explain. I'm intrigued, I always thought that's were it came from. Especially with the bowing / worship thing too.

I used to have this computer game based on a Chinese tile game. The music to that was suitably oriental, and I could listen to it for hours. I always got the impression you could string any sequence of notes together in a Chinese rhythm and style and it would sound ok. I'm probably wrong there.
Anyway, I really like the opening to Ryuchu Sakamoto's Last Emperor -

Here's a song (Mariama) by Baaba Maal I used to listen to a lot -

The fusion groups often sound a bit samey to me. I used to like Loop Guru though. (Yay to gamelan!)

I really enjoy tribal drumming, throat singing, and Indian classical music.

I'm a big fan of world music ie anything that's not western pop music, especially music from India and the surrounding countries, various parts of Africa (I'm not sure which country is which, but I can recognise African music when I hear it.)

Oh boy, Guinean rhythm music used to be my obsession. I would spend hours transcribing Mamady Keita DVDs. I just received my music degree in piano, but ethnomusicology was an unofficial minor for me. I studied Afro-Latin and West African music, but I primarily focused on Guinea. I also have some sparse knowledge of Ghanaian Ewe drumming. In the summers I help my former ethnomusicology professor lead an escola de Samba.

I also listen to a copious amount of Afro-Peruvian music. Something about that cyclical yet completely ambiguous 6/8--12/8 meter is hypnotizing. I just know as soon as school lets out, I'm going straight back to my Mamady transcriptions and I will be back at the Samba school.

I took a doctoral level ethnomusicology seminar a few years ago. It was an eye-opener, to say the very least.

Are any of you familiar with Tuvan throat singing and folk music? It's one of the most fascinating, unique old music traditions out there:

Another thing I've been enjoying lately is Indian konnakol, which is an ancient "drum language" with incredibly complex rhythms:
