Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky,
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And the people in the houses
All went to the university,
Where they were put in boxes
And they came out all the same,
And there's doctors and lawyers,
And business executives,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf course
And drink their martinis dry,
And they all have pretty children
And the children go to school,
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university,
Where they are put in boxes
And they come out all the same.

And the boys go into business
And marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

Rise Against covered Little Boxes.

It's awesome.

That reminds me of the first 2 seasons of weeds.
It's a very accurate description of white suburban America. The humor works well.

the words and music were by Malvina Reynolds. Malvina and her husband were on their way from where they lived in Berkeley, driving through San Francisco and down the peninsula to La Honda where she was to sing at a meeting of the Friends’ Committee on Legislation. As she drove through Daly City, she said “Bud, take the wheel. I feel a song coming on.”

"The Womenfolk" had a hit with their version of the song, in 1964, that is the version [aside from pete seger's version] that most folkies are familiar with.

I once thought that Pete Seger wrote that song because I was not familiar with Reynolds. Then I read my C.D. booklet and realized that he did not.

i love protest music and have done since year 8 i think when we learned about it in english and our teacher briefly introduced us to the sex pistols, barry maguire and the song little boxes.
the most recent artist i have been intoduced to is alistair hulett who died 2 years ago. apparently his music was well known on the left in australia. my favourite song of his is "kick it over" which is a song about taking down the rotten capitalist system. i cant find it on the net though. he always brings his socialist politics into his music. a whole bunch of his songs are linked to at the bottom of this page in addition to his obituary:
http://www.sa.org.au/index.php?option=c ... Itemid=545

my favourites off of that list is "he fades away" which is heart breaking to listen to and "new age of the fist". he also did a cover of the internationale. this one is "good morning bouganville". it has a haunting quality to its refrain.

i love union songs and unionsong.com is full of them:
Lads of the BLF:
http://unionsong.com/u368.html by A. Hulett
the old divide and rule:
http://unionsong.com/u370.html also by hulett.

we belong to the union(you can't break me) is also a favourite:
http://unionsong.com/u061.html

also the song "from little things big things grow" is a classic(or at least it is here) it is used in a bank comercial which is gross i think, since it is a song about working class struggle(aboriginal land rights) being used to advertise for the capitalist class:

punk and political hiphop is good.

That union song website is very interesting and could I probably spend hours listening to all of the songs.
I enjoy the old American union songs by artists like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie.

I have never heard of A. Hulett before but he seems to have made a good first impression on me.
Socialism seems to be accepted more in Australia than the U.S.

It angers me when a meaningful song is used to advertise money and competition.
The majority of Americans seem to not care but I do. I am sure the artist is angry too.
The record companies seem to own the artists and only care about money.

I just like music. I love Bob Dylan and he had several good protest songs. Rage Against The Machine is an old favorite of mine - I got chewed out by my mom when I first brought home their self-titled CD (age 16, I think). I also like Bob Marley and think several of his songs could be classified as "protest songs."

This is a new favorite ('new' meaning 'from the past several years')....

I recently discovered "Dick Gaughan" last year thanks to lastfm.

"Know Your Rights" Sounds wonderful at the moment.
The Clash were the first band that I developed an obsessive interest for.
Now my heart belongs to another English band.

This is my favorite protest song by my favorite band.

This one comes in second and I can't listen to it without crying.
I think it may be impossible not to be moved to tears by this song.

I'll check the videos out when I get home - I'm at my "home away from home" tucked into a cupboard at a friend's house. Nice reprieve from daily life... but no speakers/headphone jacks that work properly. :P

Ever listen to John Butler Trio? I'd call them environmental protest music, mostly. Problem with them is that their pervasive use of metaphor makes it hard to understand what they're singing about half the time. They're excellent musicians, though, and if you like emotional music, they're usually a safe bet...

BUT, he really needs to learn the last verse.

The man needs to releases an album. I am sure that the very poor couldn't afford it but he's not concerned about them anyway.
Hugo Chavez has released an album and he can actually sing very well.

Bush is a very good singer as well.

I love protest songs, especially retro ones, for their historical significance.

disparity by design by rise against

and re-education (through labour) which goes with it thematically.

both come off as an ode to the working class or fudge you bourgeoisie. or at least that's how i interpret it. might be seeing it through rose(red) tinted glasses.
bliss and eso's the sea is rising. it's hiphop. mixing it up a bit:

artrat: i think it might be more acceptable to be a socialist here but there is a lot of red baiting at election time and you do get the occasional person crossing the street when you're doing stalls affiliated with socialist groups or sectarian attitudes from a few at rallies when you march in red blocks but otherwise nobody cares. glad you liked the songs. that new model army song is cool. george bush singing bloody sunday however... i dont know if i should be disturbed or collapsing in laughter.
