How about Robert Fripp (of King Crimson and numerous collaborative projects)? I don't know for sure but he strikes me as a possible Aspie.

Saw the Doors movie and he seemed pretty geeky, and while everyone else went outside he just sat there on that keyboard, like an obsession to come up with the perfect organ riff to begin "Light My Fire."

Franz Ferdinand.

I am not sure who writes the lyrics in that band, but they are definitely too otherworldly to be emo.

I'm guessing Morrissey is too obvious for people to mention

I discovered this site last night, and registered today just to reply to this topic.

Here are a few musicians whom I suspect (key word being SUSPECT) may have Asperger's/HFA:

Pete Townshend
Elvis Costello
Chris Martin

Am I on the mark?

Honestly, I think the lead singer of simple plan(or whoever is the main lyricist) HAS to be autistic somehow. I mean, I've been listenin to the 2nd cd by them more and more every day and its just too much like an autistic anthem-filled album. You have songs like "Me against the world" where the chorus goes:

"I'm a nightmare, a disaster, that's what they always said.
I'm a lost cause, not a hero, but I'll make it one my own.
They love to see me fall, they think they know it all
I gotta prove them wrong, me against the world"

Then you have "welcome to my life" where pretty much the WHOLE SONG seems like its written in an autistic point of view, especially
"To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life"

I know a lot of people don't like them because thier sound(too poppy or so I've been told), the vocals are kinda high and "whiny". But seriously, the lyrics are too good to be criticized before you hear them a couple times to get used to the sound.

Gordon Downie, Lead Singer, The Tragically Hip

I'm not aware of Mr Downie having been Dx'ed as an Aspie but from what I've seen in some of his lyrics (he's also been described as an eccentric wordsmith) I get the feeling he might be.

I also had the pleasure of meeting this singer while I volunteered in backstage hospitality at a Blues festival. When The Tragically Hip arrived for dinner Gordon just stood there stoking himself in an open area instead of taking a seat in the dining section we had made for the bands. Meanwhile we were all buzzing back and forth past him, getting and delivering things the bands needed, and for us it was like --ok, try not to bump him.

Off stage I was left with the impression of him being quite shy and aloof but on the stage, this guy and his band are a live act like no other.

If Gordon Downie is AS-autistic, then he is a living example of one who has found his niche in life without any special intervention.

Tell me anything else you know about Gordon that I haven't mentioned here, or correct me if I'm wrong.

I think some people are focusing way too much on lyrical points of view, you can be outcasted for different things than AS...

But Matt Bellamy (Muse) & Maynard James Keenan seem AS-ish to me...

Agreed on the lyric portion. Some of these people may be depressed or 'emotional' which can spark the best writings. Song writers who wrote during addiction (cocaine or through a marijuana high), depression, or horrible times tend to write more meaningful stuff then someone who is happy all the time viewing butterflies. We can relate to it, better, because many of us here are depressed.

Jay Kay from Jamiroquai.

The hats, the fights with paparazzi & the fact he's an utter perfectionist... sounds like it to me...

He definatly is eccentric, but if he had AS or not is in the air. Same with Maynard James Keenan. It would be tyte if Zappa or Maynard had it because I have it and I think they're dope.

This may stray from the topic but at the same time fit in this thread.

I'm play bass, and am looking forward to being in a band if I can find other musicians.

My stepdad was saying the other day that because of my AS I may not be able to handle touring. This obviously isn't true, is it? I should be able to handle it.
