<--- Mostly listens to classical these days. I did see quite a few metal bands back in the day, though. These included Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Blue Oyster Cult, KISS, Def Leppard and System Of A Down.

Metal is for people with passionate emotions and people who deal with real life things. It is the most expressive genre to me...I just wish the vocals were better often.

He who ignores a shout will strain to hear a whisper.

I disagree completely with your assertion, though you do qualify it with the phrase "to me". This alone is sufficient to file your statement under 'opinion'.

I suggest that most people are capable of passionate emotions, and yet most people don't like metal. Additionally, there is no mileage in any argument that suggests one genre of music is more or less expressive than another.

I say there is a lot that can be used to argue Metal is a more expressive music genre than most music genres.

Seems to me that taste in music is completely unrelated to AS. I had a brief period during adolescence where I thought metal was cool. Then I went through another period where I thought Blink-182 was the best thing ever. These days my taste is very broad and highly dependent on my mood. For the most part I listen to very mellow stuff. I also like certain types of electronic music. But I detest metal now. If someone is playing it near me it irritates me to the point where it can cause meltdowns.

I also believe wholeheartedly that every genre of music is equally expressive. If you think a genre isn't expressive, it's probably just because it's expressing something you don't identify with.

On the other hand, I suppose there's no chance that I can convince anyone that their favorite genre of music is not objectively better than any other, so I'll just leave it at that.

I have songs that range from themes of misanthropy to grieving to hope to political to joke songs in metal. It is a very expressive genre, and only metal seems to truly make you feel the pissed off lyrics very effectively...nothing like a song with the chorus "I hate everyone!" to scream out frustration with the world.

Likewise, I could argue that any other genre of music is the most expressive or emotive. However, my arguments would be rendered null and void by the fact that all expression and emotional context of music is reliant on subjective interpretation.

That said, I'd still be interested to read anything you had to offer.

Huh? More expressive?

Just what makes it more expressive?

There's nothing like a song with the chorus "I hate everyone" to make me think of a spoiled brat who's frustration with the world are most likely to be his own doing.

So you've never felt like the world is just trying to tear you apart and wanted to scream out in frustration? You can judge the lyrics for yourself if you'd like. Sometimes you want to scream out the anger.

It seems to me that any music that is really expressive should be able to express just about any emotion. Hate and frustration are probably about the simplest to express.

All the people saying that metal can only be about expressing violence and hate really don't get it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwAfaG3Y7aI

Living like us and sharing our day.
In another world very far away
A different existence, yet virtually the same.
Aggression is sadness and laughter is pain
Look deep into their eyes for what they have to say
Emotions take control of life everyday.
Unpredictable variations of behavior,
Hold the key to the mental door
Where nothing is everything, and everything is nothing
Staring beyond the wall a thousand times over

Seeing a part of them that is real
Just imagine how it might feel
To be denied of what life has to give
Behind mental shadows they must live
Look deep into their eyes for what they have to say
Emotions take control of life everyday.

Metal is great, as for it being about violence and hate there are lots of other topics in various lyrics as well. Hate and violence do exist and considering them taboo topics doesn't really help solve anything does it. Should they ban all books that explore those particular topics as well? Anyways its not for everyone, but it is not a bad genre of music all genres have good and bad bands and it also somewhat depends on ones taste and perspective.

Anyways I suppose the devil created psychedelic rock as well as the blues since those genres contributed to metal, according to documentaries, books about music history and college courses about music history...and therefore 'metal comes from hell' makes sense.

I like some metal. I'm not into thrash or screaming or not being able to detect the melody, etc. Example of what I like:

Metal is more intense music. Ergo, it is better at expressing more intense emotions, ranging from anger to despair to joy and more. Of course, it's not as good at expressing subtler emotions for the sames reason, which is why it can be debated that other genres are more expressive than metal. However, I don't think it can be debated that say, Electronic Dance Music is a more expressive genre than Metal.

It really annoys me how Metal is associated as being angry or hateful music. First, Metal is definitely not the only angry music. Noise Music, Industrial, and Hardcore Punk are all more predisposed to being angry than Metal, and there is even angry pop music. Early Hip Hop is a whole lot more angry and hateful than early Metal is. Second, all the anger in Metal really came from Hardcore Punk with the politics removed. The only metal subgenres that are predisposed to being angry are the ones with a heavy Hardcore influence like Thrash, Grind, Metalcore, Death, and Sludge Metal. Hateful Metal seems to be centered around just some of the angry ones and Black Metal. All the other metal subgenres tend to not be so angry or hateful. For example, Doom Metal tends to be gloomy, and Power Metal even tends to be happy. Of course there is angry and hateful metal in other subgenres, but shows diversity in musical expression. Not even all Death Metal is angry or hateful, some of it is quite philosophical.

Do any of these sound very angry or very hateful?
