What instrument(s) do you play? I played the French Horn (many years ago), and am currently learning acoustic guitar (Martin DCM and DM-12).

Why did you choose to start? The standard reason why any guy wants to play the guitar...for the women :D I figured that if I learned to play, then that would give me something to do with a group of people, but would keep me out of the random chit-chat and still let someone come up to me to start a conversation.

How long have you played for? About 6 months

Is it a passion? A pastime? A profession? An outlet for emotions, or an alternative means of self-expression? A pastime and maybe a little bit of artistic expression.

I played violin for a year, then I asked my mom if I could take art lessons instead so I didn't play the violin any more (I was around 7 or 8 years old). Then, when I was 11, I began playing the tenor trombone, and I have been playing ever since (for around 5 years). The trombone is the only musical instrument by far that I have been taking seriously, and I love it. I might begin playing the violin again, but I don't have that kind of time to learn another instrument and practice the one I have currently. I probably will learn to play it again in the future though.

What instruments do I play, or can I play?

What I do play: anything I have available to me.

What I can play: same as above.

Edit: this includes most string and percussion instruments, but does not include any type of wind instrument aside from harmonica.

What instrument(s) do you play? Piano.

Why did you choose to start? I had a childhood obsession with pipe organs. However, my parents did not own a pipe organ, so I had to settle for playing on the upright piano in the living room. After a few years, I lost interest in pipe organs and fell in love with the piano.

How long have you played for? 25 years

Is it a passion? A pastime? A profession? An outlet for emotions, or an alternative means of self-expression? It is a passion that I have unsuccessfully tried to make into a profession.

I might learn Accordion this summer. And if I end up going to some sort of music school, I'd love to learn Organ.

I played the violin for 8 years, got caught up in other stuff when I was 15 so I stopped.. but it was really good because if I wasn't feeling too great I could just go and play. So no doubt I'll take it up again soon. But when you get assessed on it theres so much pressure to practise and memorize it for exams, so I'd much rather just play then have to prepare and get examined on it.

What instrument(s) do you play?

Piano - reached university-entrance level but lost the passion;
Guitar - my favourite;
Bass Guitar - can fill in if necessary;
Bongoes :lol:

Why did you choose to start?

I fell in love with the piano when I was six. My Aunty gave me her piano and after spending countless hours banging on it, my parents decided I needed lessons.

I started the guitar when I was 15 because I wanted to play Metallica songs. Same goes with bass.

I played the bongoes because I was a leftist activist for a time and having drums in a protest really gets people going!

How long have you played for?

Most of my life.

Is it a passion? A pastime? A profession? An outlet for emotions, or an alternative means of self-expression?

Passion, past-time, form of relaxation [I can fall asleep playing guitar], creative outlet [I must've written nearly 100 songs by now] so I pretend to be artistic, and maybe a profession in the future.

I tried a few years ago. I used Fruit Loop [or something], mainly. I found it interesting but very time-consuming, so I gave up eventually :P I was more into industrial than new-wave.

I started playing the piano when I was eleven and stopped, against my will, when I was fourteen. My father wouldn't allow me to play anymore, for reasons I won't get into here. I really enjoyed it and won two first-place awards, at district and state levels. I have been wanting to start up again, and live in a house with a piano, but am somewhat intimidated by the idea. I've also been considering taking up the fiddle.

same here !

thnking of learning the chinese 'erhu' instrument first though ! only 2 strings :lol:

Does anyone here find that after a while learning an instrument you realise it just wasnt suited to you ? Ive been playing guitar for 6 years now, and i have to admit im not as good as i could be. I think its down to lack of self discipline. I went for a few piano lessons last year and my teacher told me i was amazing for a complete beginner. Unfortunately i had to give up cos i had to move house. But been thinking about taking it up again. I borrowed a friends keyboard, and it just feels more comfortable to play (for me anyway) than a guitar. I still play my guitar everyday, but not really learning new techniques, but mostly writing simple strummy type songs. Also i find writing melodies easier on the piano. I think this is down to the guitar requiring 2 steps for a note - note down and pluck whereas with a piano you just press a key.

Is the piano calling out for me ?

In school I started out playing the clarinet, then taught myself to play alto sax and switched to that for a year, then moved to tenor sax for the remaining years. I haven't played in 10 years but I'm sure I could still do it.
