Schubert's Serenade

The blend of guitar and violins complements Schubert's Serenade very well. Thank you for that, it's a lovely piece.

What are your guys' favorite CDs? IF you give me one or two each I could buy them (I have an excuse, Monday is my birthday, Haha). I love almost everything you have posted so far so I'm not worried about your tastes!

Happy Birthday!

I wish I lived in Prague. You could go to classical concerts there on the cheap.

Happy Birthday!

Before you buy..... it's best to explore and find what truly appeals to you. The music critics have their opinions, but no matter what anyone else says, the great thing about art is that each of us develop our own tastes. The more you explore this musical realm, the more you'll discover the particular composers and pieces that touch your heart. We're talking about multiple centuries of work by prolific artists. J.S. Bach alone composed over a thousand compositions!

I recommend that most listeners immerse themselves in a variety, beginning with a couple notable composers of each musical time period:

Baroque: J.S. Bach, Vivaldi

Classical: Mozart, Haydn

Early Romantic: Beethoven, Mendelssohn

Late Romantic: Dvorak, Rachmaninoff

Impressionist: Debussy, Ravel

So, first on my chronological list is J.S. Bach...

If I were to wrap up a birthday gift for you, this would be it. I fell in love with classical music the day I first heard the Brandenburg Concertos.

That is so funny! The Bach that I mentioned in my first post was that album (well not that version of it), but it's one of the two classical albums that I already own. I like it, it's growing on me (didn't like it much at first), but I like other Bach better. That one that you posted on this page (unless this post goes to the next page) - I love that one!

The fact that there are so many and so many versions of each are what is so confusing. It's really weird, Ive always thought of classical music as something you play in the background at a dinner party or something. Maybe you hear a note and think oh that's pretty, then you go back to your guests. I would NEVER have intentionally listened to it. I'm obsessed with music though, so I guess this was bound to happen.

It's just very different listening to this kind of music, my ears are still in training!

Btw, this whole experience and learning about this and all of you great posts have been a really great bday present - not wrapped up, more like EXPLODING! :D

If you're still adjusting your ears, perhaps it would make sense to move backwards on the chronological list since the impressionists are probably closest to 20th century cinematic and other music you're familiar with already.

So... Debussy and Ravel... do you have them in your music collection?

You could try pianist François-Joël Thiollier's recordings.
