It’s my dream to be published one day. I don’t know why I need that outside validation, but it has always been a dream of mine.

You need the “outside validation” because that stokes egos....and might lead to you being able to make a living as a writer (yes, a very rare feat in the best of times),

Yes, it is definitely a very unique combination of ego and low self esteem.

Regardless, it is disheartening that it is very rare to make a living as a writer nowadays.

But also, anytime something becomes a “job” it can instantly become less enjoyable.

I like to be able to write whatever I want, whenever I want. It would hurt my heart to have someone tell me how to write or what to write.

I go through phases where I can write and where I can’t. I usually write the most when I am at my darkest.

Me too!

My best writing is when I’m going through difficulties.

I know you would love to be a woman Dean Moriarity.

To quote a random website...

“ Dean is madly enthusiastic about everything”

“ His own freedom is of utmost importance to Dean, but his obsession with his own freedom to move around and go on the road means that he neglects his responsibilities”

“ but by the end of the novel Dean is presented as a lonely, tragic character, almost doomed to wander the road by himself.”

Yes, this describes me perfectly!

Sadly, every time I put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) to set down a new story idea, I find out that someone else has already written the exact same story.  Here is a recent idea of mine:

Quote:
What would you do if you found a spaceship?  Would you call the government, would you pretend you never saw it, or would you keep it a secret?  What would you do with it?  Use it to explore the galaxy, conquer Earth, get filthy rich, or would you try to improve life on Earth?
Well, guess what?  I just picked up a copy of "Starship Sakira" by Robert Blanton!
Quote:
Read along and find out how Marc tries to convert Earth into a spacefaring world capable of defending itself and of being united as it meets the other civilizations in the galaxy.  Marc and his crew need to accomplish all this without tipping off the U.S. Government and before the Paraxeans come looking for their spaceship.  But they have help, the ship's AI is on their side and she is smart.  Starship Sakira is the first book in the exciting new adventure series Delphi in Space.
I have mixed feelings ... joy that "my" story is being told ... sadness that someone else is already telling it.

:) :(

Dean Moriarty is Neal Cassady. He was only "Dean" in "On the Road."

I think there is always a new way to tell a story. A new perspective. A new twist. Don’t give up if you have a story inside you that needs to be told...you should write it!! !!

Just came across this, which sounds plenty reasonable to me,
"
theliteraryarchitect Writing tip #5: The right length for a chapter is exactly equal to the length that feels like the right length for that chapter, whether that be 5 or 5,000 words. Your book, your rules.

Another Tumblr find perhaps of interest:
"
Write fanfiction of your own work in progress

blueingaround:

Alright, this might seem a little weird, but it’s very known that fanfiction authors can have a really good sense of characterization. I’ve read fics before that got it so right I would sometimes forget it was fanfiction and not part of the original work.
Now onto why you should write fanfiction of your own original projects.

We had creative writers group this morning and instead of wroting to the provided prompts for our 20 minute timed writing exercise I wrote out a scene which popped in ti my mind just after I woke up in the morning.

Here is is;

Quote:
It had not rained last night but those who observed life at only a superficial level might have concluded that from how flatly a heavy dew had pasted fallen leaves to the mid-block alley's asphalt. A fog of the kind often described with culinary metaphor gave that curious sense of the world being smaller; the sheds, fences, and garages lining the alley being closer; and even those on the next block seemingly just an arm's length away.

A white dog with black patches trotted from left to right on the crossing alley; its colorless tones contrasting with, yet halfway blending in to, the red and yellow speckled pavement. Absorbed enough in its own endeavor that it did not notice me as I tossed back the hood of my cloak, the creature continued on out of my sight without even glancing my direction.

With the woolen hood down my ears now caught the sound of drops of collected dampness falling from the eaves of the shed to my right.
This kind of damp would have been bone chilling cold if the air were colder this almost warm fall morning. Then again, if it had been normal seasonal temperature there would be no dew, no fog, no fitting air of mystery as I set about my mission.

Hello. I am a writer. I used to write short stories, I finished the first draft of a novel which I occasionally return to in the hopes of getting it to make sense!

I started it before my daughter was born but wrote most of it after and its become a sort of an exploration of all my worst fears of raising a girl child.

I struggle to find time to write for pleasure at the moment. In between work and being a replacement primary school teacher while the schools are closed, I rarely have the energy. But its been a dream for a long time to get published. I don't think this novel I've written is commercially viable, but I've learned a lot writing it and have ideas for others.

I'm interested to see poets here. I have rarely been able to connect with poetry, either as a writer or a reader - it leaves me cold for some reasons. But some of my favourite fiction writers are also poets.

Hey There!
Don't know that I'll be able to provide much in the way of poetry.
Yeah, can see where you would be pretty busy!
Hard to tell what is or isn't commercially viable, at least via what has been seen in articles or heard from published writers I talk to.
That learning bit is an important one!

Welcome to Wrong Planet!

I'm a poet and a writer. My daughter writes novels as well. Glad to meet you!
