I see the topic title, the first one I think of is Yngwie Malmsteen. I open the topic, the first one I see is Yngwie Malmsteen. Awesome!

I don't get the fascination with guitarists, especially the ones who are into complexity and technical virtuosity for its own sake. I prefer to hear a (relatively) straightforward tune played with style, like How Soon Is Now?, or Afraid to Shoot Strangers.

That is exactly why Hendrix is a cut above. Dude had no knowledge whatsoever of music theory and just did whatever sounded awesome and, well, people know what became of that... Even in the most "organized" recordings he is clearly so raw and just doing whatever works. It's the best.
