This artwork was made in response to the "Moral and National Education", a compulsory curriculum planned to be introduced in elementary and secondary schools in Hong Kong. Officially aimed to “strengthen national identity and pride among students”, its teaching materials contain praise on the Chinese Communist Party, simplistic critics on democratic systems and text outlining specific racial features as national identity. In a particular outrageous chapter, pupils are instructed to feel “passionate and joyous” when singing national anthem.
Even with overwhelming protest, the Hong Kong government insisted on keeping it, deciding that to indoctrinate narrow nationalism in an international metropolis is a good idea. After all, why submit to those hunger strikers who are controlled by the Western powers? Such is the politics of Hong Kong, where North Korea or Nazi Germany is the way to go
