I bet you can pick out the guitar licks from Lucy in the Sky as well as Birthday and......Ticket To Ride! A band fronted by two brothers, Matt and Dan Wilson. Matt, as in this song, was normally the singer in this band. His brother Dan went on to form the more noted band Semisonic along with the bass player of this band.
I like the lyrics of this song. I'm guessing the "Elaine" that he calls out to in this song is in reference to the drummer in the band, Elaine Harris. I have a thing for bands with female drummers. Elaine played the drums standing up. Very cool.
The sounds that projected from the petite and demure looking singer still amaze me. The video is an excerpt from an excellent documentary called The Year Punk Broke. Look it up if you can find it. It's probably on Youtube.
I'm personally not a fan of this band (the singers voice and delivery bugs the ever lovin' out of me), but they are a fairly popular Minnesota band....
"Love and hate was in the air like pollen from a flower Somewhere in April time they add another hour.."
Yup, one of my favorite bands of all time.
Isabella, you have your "Sail on silvergirl" line that's part of you. For me it's a line from this song:
"I summer where I winter at and no one is allowed there." (Hello, inner-world!!)
A bittersweet memory related to this song though: One of my best friends/roommates that I shared indelibly formative and once in a lifetime memories with commented matter-of-factly after listening to this song during a summer in our youth that his life would never be as fulfilling as it was when we were in that present moment. He said that his life was at its pinnacle at that moment. I was surprised by his statement and kind of brushed it off. He did go downhill mentally from that time onward, estranged himself completely from his family and faded off from his friends as well. I haven't seen him in about 20 years. None of us that knew him know if he's alive or dead.
This was a short lived band. The singer/guitarist was a virtuoso. Unfortunately, from what I understand his music career was cut short due to heroin addiction. Perhaps that's not correct.....
This was a trio formed by Paul Osby after his Otto's Chemical Lounge band. The drinking age in my state had just been raised from 18 to 21. I must have looked a bit older or the planets were aligned as I passed on through the line at age 17 to see this band. Oops!
