This could have been my theme song as a kid. Unlike other kids, I didn't want to "be something" when I grew up. I didn't want to grow up. Playing outside, climbing trees, talking to birds and animals, playing with my toys, being in the "natural world" by myself with my parents leaving me largely alone to explore. Where was the room for improvement????
Ever been to Dinkytown, where Dylan lived before he went to NYC?
"Dinkytown" is an area around the University of Minnesota campus. Yes, I've been there many times. There was a restaurant called the Village Wok that my friends and I use to go to late at night. There was also a store called The Needle Doctor that we use to get our turntable supplies at. It's a neighborhood with many college students as could be imagined given its proximity to the U of M.
This is an awesome album. I'm glad I have it on vinyl. Alex Chilton will always be one of my favorites and he was great to see live. I saw him both at a larger venue as well as a small bar. At the small bar, I yelled out a request and that very next song.......he played my request. I treasure that experience. R.I.P. Alex.....
There's something about his voice to me that carries feelings that are unique. It's not a sadness.
His voice, his music, Big Star.... It's like memories frozen and suspended in the air. Old printed contact paper lining kitchen apartment drawers, a worn linoleum floor, sunlight cutting through a dirty window and rubbing its way slowly across the rug then up the chalky shell of the wall, its previous colors hiding in layers like a pearl, tobacco fines and coffee rings. Those are just some of the images from feelings the music conjures up for me.
