The Face That Launched a Thousand Ships
Concept art for Helen of Troy, the leading lady in an adaptation of the Trojan War myth that I have just started writing. In my retelling Helen is the headstrong daughter of King Memnon of Kush (aka Nubia or Sudan), renown both for her beauty and her talent at archery. The Trojan prince Paris falls heads over heel for her and marries her, but he will have to protect her from the lusty Greeks who send a thousand ships after her.

Crystal Ball

In case you can't read the words, they say:

Crystal ball
There's so many things I need to know
Crystal ball
There's so many things I've got to know

It's the chorus from the song "Crystal Ball" by Styx, which inspired me to draw this. Drawing the crystal ball was easy, but getting the details perfect was a different story, as perfecting the sparkles was no easy task. I eventually got it and added a glowing effect, and wrapped the words of the chorus from the song around the crystal ball.

It's a bit too blurry to scare me, truthfully speaking.

If it wasn't blurry, would it be scary?

Maybe. It certainly looks like a freaky design

Helen the Nubian Princess (colored)
My depiction of Helen, the legendary beauty whose face launched a thousand ships and started the Trojan War, has now been colored in Photoshop. Earlier I planned on writing a whole novelized adaptation of the myth, tweaking Helen's heritage so that she became the daughter of the Nubian king Memnon, but now I feel discouraged about bastardizing Greek mythology to such an extent. Maybe I'll recycle what I had outlined for a fully original story with original characters.

I don't know where else to post this photo so I thought I'd do it here. I took this outside my window yesterday. Trying to photograph a crow is like trying to take a picture of a leaf in a hurricane. They definitely don't stand still for you no matter how hard you beg. This bird, BTW, was standing on a power line, not a roof or some other wide structure.
