Glazunov - Violin Concerto

I enjoyed this so much. Well, I guessed that I would, it's Hilary Hahn playing!

While listening, I read a little about Glazunov. I found something about Glazunov and Stravinsky.

Igor Stravinsky sure had a rough time with critics during his lifetime. This is probably why most composers are so hesitant about taking more experimental routes.

"For his part, Glazunov was not supportive of the modern direction Stravinsky's music took. He was not alone in this prejudice?their mutual teacher Rimsky-Korsakov was as profoundly conservative by the end of his life, wedded to the academic process he helped instill at the Conservatory. Unlike Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov was not anxious about the potential dead-end Russian music might take by following academia strictly, nor did he share Rimsky-Korsakov's grudging respect for new ideas and techniques.

Chances are that Glazunov treated Stravinsky with reserve, certainly not with open rudeness. His opinion of Stravinsky's music in the presence of others was another matter. At the performance of Feu d'artifice (Fireworks), he reportedly made the comment, "Kein talent, nur Dissonanz" ("no talent, just dissonance"). (Also in the audience was Sergei Diaghilev, who on the strength of this music sought out the young composer for the Ballets Russes.) Glazunov eventually considered Stravinsky merely an expert orchestrator. In 1912 he told Vladimir Telyakovsky, 'Petrushka is not music, but is excellently and skillfully orchestrated.'"

Hillary - I love watching her as much as listening to her. So sad she died so young.

That's like the greatest insult ever - No talent, just dissonance! Doesn't have to apply just to music.

Awake, I loved the Vivaldi too.

Stargazer, that was beautiful! So much life out of a one little acoustic guitar!

And it took you 31 pages of classical music to reach that conclusion? I expected more of you!

Who loves choral music? I love choral music!

If double posting makes you a bad person, I must be Satan's minion!

I'm reading Rimski Korsakov's book on orchestration now. Can't understand half of it, but the parts that I can understand are making a lot of things suddenly clear for me about music. I really have to take a music reading course in the fall!

To honor him, a fine piece:

Thank you for sharing. I love C.P.E.'s work! The cello and harp complement each other wonderfully here.

Haha, I've been getting her mixed up with Jacqueline du Pre. My brain!! I guess because Jacqueline has a sister named Hilary. What kind of connection is that? Hardly any!

Anyway, I couldn't remember who I was getting her mixed up with so I just googled to find out and also found out that Daniel Barenboim was married to her. I do know who he is. Boy, imagine that house - do you think they ever just played for fun together? I always wonder stuff like that, like did Pavarotti sing in the shower?

Apparently anytime anybody, including myself, has posted a Hahn or du Pre video, I've thought they were the same person. Have to go back and watch again to get them straight.
