In the early months of the American $ale of the Century, before the game started (but after the player intros), the contestants would be asked by the host to test their buzzers to see if they were working. Here's how this segment goes.
ME: Good to have you here, people. Here's how we do this. I ask you questions, if you answer right, you get $5, but if you answer wrong, you lose $5. The player with the most money at the end of this game will get to do some wonderful shopping with me. And before we go any further, we'll ask that you test your buzzers to see if everything's working. Starting with you, Adrienne.
(Adrienne presses her buzzer)
ME: And you, William.
(William presses his buzzer)
ME: And finally, our champion, Jen.
(Jen presses her buzzer)
ME: OK! Everything is working fine, and we'll start you all with $20, and here we go.......
