Nature Lives

I think I am getting the hang of watercolors. As an side note, I noticed the paint I use smells bad, like bad eggs, before dilution, but when the painting is dry, smells like nothing but paper. Weird.

This may sound weird, but it might smell that way because it has egg in it. Many paints outside oil paints historically had some egg in them, Where were the paints bought?

I add egg white to my watercolors when I want a tad less "run" of the paint. Some yolk, if I'm painting on wood, and all the egg smell disappears when dry.

Seems like an angry little mushroom guy, well perhaps not angry but more of a snide expression.. Yeah more of a snide mushroom..

I like your mushroom picture! And yes maybe he is snide. He is mocking our inability to meet his level of awesomeness.

I like your work, slickbacksteve. It's very chaotic, but I mean that as a compliment. :)

Also, Mirror21 - you are really good with watercolors! I love your mushroom guy! To me, he looks like he just got woken up from a nap and is saying/thinking "Do you mind? I am trying to sleep!" :)

@slickbacksteve

Whoah, that's some awesomely macabre stuff you got there. :D

Big Hair for a Big Headdress
Queen Tiye, the Egyptian Queen who was Amenhotep III’s senior wife and King Tut’s grandmother, supports the cow’s horn and sun disk of the goddess Hathor atop her coiffure. It must have been difficult to balance if she ever wore such a getup in real life, but then African people’s hair is apparently great for sticking stuff into it.

Although there is an authentic bust of Queen Tiye featuring this hairstyle and headdress, the face paint was inspired by the Surma people of southwestern Ethiopia. Most modern artists draw the Egyptians’ makeup as resembling European-style eyeshadow and eyeliner, but I like to think the Egyptians would have applied it in a different, more creative way than this.

Egyptian Peasant House
This is supposed to represent the humble dwelling of a commoner from ancient Egypt. I based the architectural design off a model “soul house” recovered from a Middle Kingdom tomb, but the exterior whitewashing job was left to my imagination. For that I drew inspiration from the village of Tiebele in modern Burkina Faso, which is known for some very elaborate exterior wall paintings. As for the front door, it’s based loosely off the intricately decorated doors used by the Dogon people of Mali. Unfortunately searching for images of doors in ancient Egypt only led me to the so-called “false doors” used in funerary chapels, so again I had to guess at what kind of doors common Egyptians might have used (if any at all).

Thank you I started working with them recently, like a month or two ago. And I can see how it looks like a sleepy mushroom. Got a few other projects with watercolors in mind, but I need to get more watercolor sheets I am almost out!

Darling Apple

It has been a bit since I tried to draw her and I was getting a little melancholic I guess. So I whipped up a quick sketch of Apple as I saw her in my mind that day. I have pretty much abandoned the idea of giving her pointed ears. But leafs in the hair always a must!

I messed up her left eye, and I didn't notice it till way later. But its just a doodle so I am not overly upset by it.

Sketched with a 2B aquarelle.

Betrayed
I just lost one of the best friends I thought I had in my whole life. And this time she's not coming back. I won't share the specifics of the confrontation publicly, but I just wanted to vent out my hurt and anger through this art.

The world never feels lonelier than when the people you care about betray you.

Thanks, BrandonSP, I appreciate the compliment. Sorry to hear you're on a low spell; it always hurts worse the closer someone is to you. I'll send some positive vibes your way.

slickbacksteve: Your work is wonderfully disturbing! Manifesto'tasic bro, I look forwards to see more of your art.

Forbidden_Donut: Wow, amazing portraiture! It's intimidatingly impressive how you capture faces.

Brandon: More great pieces. I really enjoy your different hypothesis on Egyptian/North African history and other archaeological speculations. Any interesting speculations on Göbekli Tepe?

Haven't really thought about that, since my specialty is Africa. Those ruins you named are fascinating though in that they were apparently built before large-scale agriculture in the Middle East (IIRC).
