The Cat

Watercolor painting. I did this as a present for a friend. Needless to say she really liked it.

^ I really like the feline's eye.

Image
The Leopard Pharaoh
This isn't supposed to depict any particular personality from ancient Egyptian or Nubian history. In fact she would probably work best as a fantasy character from a fictional world based loosely on Earth's antiquity. Her eye paint is of course patterned after leopards.

The line art for this portrait actually dates all the way back to October 1st, but I just got around to coloring it today with a newly downloaded Adobe Photoshop CS6. Previously I had used Photoshop Elements for my coloring, but the full version of Photoshop has a greater range of functions than Elements.

Image
Mafdet the Egyptian Spy
I haven't developed this character in depth yet, but she's supposed to be some kind of warrior-spy, the ancient Egyptian female equivalent of James Bond. The leopard-skin pieces in her attire are meant to channel the big cat's stealth and agility. The weapons she carries here are a dagger for close-up combat and a forked throwing knife for ranged attacks.

Mafdet is named for a little-known feline deity whose animal form has been variously described as a leopard, cheetah, or caracal ("lynx").

Miss Marvel

Not sure what compelled me to do Comic Book art, but there you have it. A portrait of Miss Marvel from Marvel Comics. It was lightly sketched with a .5 mech pencil, and done in watercolor with .4 black felt tip pen accents.

Mortal Kombat Pharaoh
If the Mortal Kombat franchise ever decides to incorporate influences outside Asia, I'd like to see them tackle African characters like this warrior Pharaoh. She'd use that khopesh sword and bladed flail to inflict her fatalities.

Originally I was going to draw my own logo with a cobra in place of the traditional dragon to fit the Egyptian theme, but I couldn't get the negative space to look circular. Yet it was an even bigger hassle to devise a decent glowing look for the dragon logo I did end up using.

In all honesty I can't call myself a hardcore Mortal Kombat fan. I did enjoy the first movie, love the theme song, and used to enjoy fighting games. On the other hand I performed poorly when actually trying out the original game in a video arcade. Maybe I should pick up the newer PS3 games once I get back into my old gaming habits (I'll make that one of my resolutions next year).

Tshomba Therapies a Triceratops
My original heroine Tshomba, an African lady mage, uses her healing magic to soothe an ornery Triceratops.

When I initially created Tshomba, I didn't really have a clear idea of her personality or back-story. All I knew is that she came from the Central African country of Kongo (now Congo) and joined a dashing 17th-century English privateer named James Swann in his adventures. However, the more I mulled over the scene I had written for her and Swann, the less satisfied I felt about how the whole story would turn out. In large part this was because I didn't develop their characters well to begin with, leaving large and critical hols in the plot I had developed.

Over the course of drawing and coloring this illustration, it occurred to me that Tshomba might work better as a nature mage who could communicate with dinosaurs and other animals a la Dr. Dolittle or Eliza Thornberry. It would certainly provide a refreshing contrast to the dinosaur-slaying huntresses I have created previously since her relationship with the animals would be less antagonistic. I am not sure if I want to keep the 17th-century setting or James Swann though.

That's pretty damn good, slickbacksteve! Looks like a cross between Dali and Stephen Gammell's work in the Scary Stories series.

Here's a couple doodles I did while bored at work quite some time ago.

And a drawing I'm in the process of finishing.

^ Wow, really like how smooth the bottom Venom picture looks!

Cleopatra the Charming
Cleopatra VII may not be my favorite monarch in Egyptian history, but somehow she's become one of my favorite historical characters to draw after Hatshepsut. It helps that since she went down in history as a powerful seductress, it seems more appropriate to sexualize her than other prominent historical women. Ancient Roman accounts conflict on just how beautiful she was, but as an artist I like to go with the upper-range estimates.

In case you're curious, that's supposed to be an Egyptian cobra slithering around her arm.

I'm not sure if this is accurate ,but I read somewhere that the ancient Egyptians believed the bite of the cobra would bestow immortality. If this is true, I can understand why Cleopatra used it to commit suicide.Great work by the way.
I love Miss Mavel's expression Mirror21.

That's seriously something I'd put on my wall! What medium is that?

I am skeptical myself, but thanks!

Another booty pin-up:
Image
Hatshepsut the Divine
After doing Cleopatra VII's booty pin-up, I thought it only fair to give the same treatment to the other famous female ruler from ancient Egypt, Pharaoh Hatshepsut of the 18th dynasty. Unlike Cleo, who was at least of partial Greco-Macedonian heritage, Hatshepsut was almost certainly a pure-bred native Egyptian and ruled her country with much greater success (for one, Egypt didn't get conquered when she passed the throne over).

Although Hatshepsut has never enjoyed Cleopatra's post-mortem reputation as a sexy seductress, hieroglyphic inscriptions from her time do describe her as very beautiful in her youth. Some might protest that this pin-up over-sexualizes the Pharaoh, but I on the other hand there is nothing wrong with appreciating the undressed female form every now and then.

Unfortunately Hatshepsut did not age very well for her mummy indicates she put on a lot of pounds and died an obese woman.

@ slickbacksteve

I wonder where you get the inspiration for your subject matter. It's still well-drawn though.

And now for a little humor...
Image
Anime and Chibi Skulls
The physical anthropologist in me could not help but ask what the crania (skulls) of anime and chibi-style characters would look like. And what sort of evolutionary pressures would select for these features, in particular the exaggerated orbits (eyes)?

In fairness, not only do a lot of Western cartoons have their own unique stylizations that would produce bizarre skeletons of their own, but real infant skulls do have some freaky proportions. And it's not like professional anime artists don't need to know their basic human anatomy anyway.
