heres an idea redmage: to learn proportions, put paper over an image and draw over it. But rather than tracing the actual lines, draw shapes around the general shape of the figure or whatever it is. Then take it off and put in the details.

I agree! learn how to think in shapes first. That makes drawing easier.

I added some shadows and lights, well, took some liberties using your drawing :P

next, try drawing some lights and shadows in your drawing, don't
try to be too perfect, just enjoy what you're doing :)

highlights and shadows are easy to do if you understand lighting. Also, use complementary colors to do shadows.
