I'd probably have to say Nadirah Shakoor for some of her Parrot Head work...the JB concert recordings as well as her role in "Don't Stop the Carnival"...incredibly powerful voice.

There's one woman whose voice always captivated me. Her name is Harriet Wheeler, and she was in a British band called the Sundays. They had a few hits in the early 90s, but never developed a big following. That's one of the reasons I liked her so much: I felt like I could have her music all to myself.

Harriet Wheeler: i saw The Sundays when they were a support act for someone (cant remember who - maybe The Pale Saints or James?). Their first album was quite good.

Yeah, I know who that is. I'm not big into prog rock, but if we're talking obscure throw-backs from the 60's, I'll go with 60's cult songtress Vashti Bunyan.

I also like Nina Natasia and Loreena McKenna.

I also like female jazz vocalists, like Sarah Vaugh and Ella Fitzgerald.

Loreena McKenna was profiled recently on "Echoes" for her new album "An Ancient Muse".

Roberta Flack-The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. She sang that song about her cat.

The obvious but "too ashamed to namedrop" are:

Whitney Houston
Dianne Warrwick
Mariah Carey
Alicia Keys

But my faves are:

Le Tigre (all three of them)
Sleater Kinney (again all of them)
Karen Dalton
Dolly Parton
Justine Frischmann
Shirley Manson
Corrine Ray Bailey (or close to that name)
Sheena Easton
Billie Holliday
Etta James

True, in my opinion. But Elliot Smith brings me to tears when I listen to his stuff.

I'm a bit confused as to why there aren't more female musicians in the world. Females are usually more creative and have better finger desterity, so it seems they are more suited to be musicians. Music was never really labeled as a masculine activity, so why are 90% of musicians males?
