I guess “unusual” can be misinterpreted. GYBE is not that obscure, but I would call it unusual because there aren’t many other “rock” bands that play that kind of music.

yeah. although there are a lot of gybe rip off bands that try to produce a similar sound, but I haven't heard anyone trying to imitate them sucessfully apart from mono.

I’ve also been looking online for dissonant ambient stuff but haven’t bought anything. I’ve found stuff like “Lull” and “Northaunt”. I like the atmosphere, but it’s hard to tell from the online samples if it will be too repetitive for me.

get robert fripp - the gates of paradise and biosphere - substrata.

From the amazon reviews I think I'll like "substrata". Desolate, yet interesting enough to keep me awake. I only wish I could find it cheaper than $28. You know a better place to buy music than Amazon?

I'm not as sure about "gates of paradise". Hard to tell with only four 30 second samples from 20 minute tracks.

Do you know stuff that sounds sort of like the first part of "static" on "skinny fists" or the last part of "providence" on F#A#oo? The quiet parts?

I think unusual taste depends on the context.

There is an instrumental song that I love that is:

Magotbrain, by Funckadelic.

I prefer to think of my taste in music as eclectic.

Most people have no taste in music

I listen to classic rock music mostly. Might be unusual for a 21 year old, might not. I don't know. Right now I've been listening to adventure game music. If that's not unusual I don't know what is.

I've always preferred dark moody music compared to more upbeat stuff. This is true even when I’m in a good mood. I like a few upbeat songs, but I generally find cheery/silly pop music really annoying.

My favorites are Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Mogwai. Really intense, moody, spacey stuff. I just like to space out and let the music bring certain imagery to mind. While listening I can just stare at the clouds moving by and feel my spine tingling.

Well, right now I'm listening to one of the latest mixes by Submerged that I picked up on the Drum & Bass Arena tracklistings. Needless to say yeah, I've definitely got a darklight addiction - though not always specifically headbanger; deep multilayer will do it quite nicely as well.

The word “unusual” is a subjective term. If you’re using it as an opposite of “average”, you are not considering that a preference is a personal thing. People might gauge what music I prefer if they snooped around my audio players, but I doubt that I would let that happen.

I don’t even know what is considered to be “mainstream” music. I know what I prefer, and I don’t particularly pay attention to what other people prefer.

I could make a list of music that I don’t like, but I'd rather just ignore it.

You'll have to download an obscure codec to hear the samples

That “obscure” codec is called Ogg Vorbis, and is the best thing since the internet. It’s free, and is regularly preferred over all other codecs in blind listening tests. I encode all my CDs to OGG quality2 before putting them on my personal audio device. These are better sound quality than mp3 160kbps, yet are on average 30% smaller than their mp3 128 equivelent. That way, I can fit a lot of nice music in a limited amount of space.

OGG - Get it, use it, love it. Afterwards, you’ll never go back mp3.

I don't know, I usually don't buy my music is physical form.

i need (to counterbalance my responsible nature) to be a little rebelious in music which gives me a rather unusual tast as a result, although i'm rather picky when it comes to rythm or voices
i like lots of different styles (involving opera, circus-music, dark electronic stuff, things from my youth like einsturzend neubauten, nick cave, but also some french balads or french rock like noir désir, belgian stuff daau, and for the rest i prefer judging song per song and not a whole style, although i don't have a lot of affinity with metal or country)

in general maybe that a nice voice and rythmic noise are recurrent in what i prefer. so that it drives me into another world in an almost unconcious state, it has a very comforting effect.
can easily say that music saved me through different periods.

My favourites are Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis.

I like a limited amount of pop music, but I prefer insturmental/synths to singing.

I prefer instrumental over vocal, my favorites are Phillip Glass, early Vangelis,
my favorite blues singer is Ali Farqa Toure. If you into Electronica, Ambient, or other

i love nick cave, ive gotta get more of the birthday party albums

i mostly listen to black and death metal (i also really like grind core, drone and funeral doom) but my occasional indolence in Merzbow should probably count as unusual

a lot of it is either j-pop or classically influenced.

the j-pop is kinda out of the ordinary but the classical is pretty commonplace.

not sure how many would consider this weird but i find it fun.

Videogame music has something in common with J-Music, but Videogame music is the more unusual.

It's very rare find someone in real life who likes videogame music, I know some people who likes J-Music, but only my siblings and a classmate from college enjoys videogame music.

Also I like some downtempo music, and I don't know anyonewho likes it :?.
