The word “unusual” is a subjective term. If you’re using it as an opposite of “average”, you are not considering that a preference is a personal thing. People might gauge what music I prefer if they snooped around my audio players, but I doubt that I would let that happen.
I don’t even know what is considered to be “mainstream” music. I know what I prefer, and I don’t particularly pay attention to what other people prefer.
I could make a list of music that I don’t like, but I'd rather just ignore it.

That “obscure” codec is called Ogg Vorbis, and is the best thing since the internet. It’s free, and is regularly preferred over all other codecs in blind listening tests. I encode all my CDs to OGG quality2 before putting them on my personal audio device. These are better sound quality than mp3 160kbps, yet are on average 30% smaller than their mp3 128 equivelent. That way, I can fit a lot of nice music in a limited amount of space.
OGG - Get it, use it, love it. Afterwards, you’ll never go back mp3.
