They are considered industrial a subcategory of alt rock. While synth they are not synthpop like Erasure and Pet Shop Boys. Alt rock is a catchall term. Alanis Morissette and Jewel were considered alternative rock at the time.

Wow. I never thought Jewel nor Alana would be in the alternative category. I guess Ministry would be Industrial too? Industrial had a specific sound; that's the only way I recognize Industrial is by sound/feel.

I think I understand after thinking about it. The generation difference of what was called or transitioning into newer forms of alt rock makes complete sense now. My generation wasn't the transitioning from disco and punk to an alt-rock of the 80's it was more post-new wave 90's and an element of the city's weirdo scene mixed with some synthesizer bands and industrial. G R E A T S T U F F ! !! Great posts here too. I'm learning some new bands I never heard of as well.

KROQ was cool; its content was played on other stations as well in other states. Information society I remember had one okay song. The newer -at that time- synthesizer bands were pretty cool. I was highly affected by synth music especially DM & Pet Shop Boys.
