Just wondering if anyone considers themself a Goth or is into Dark Alturnative culture/music?
My dark preoccupations began as a child. I intended to dye my fair hair black as soon as I was old enough and wear velvet; in the 70's before there was a Goth scene. I would parade around in my magician cape and hat which I had made myself or run around wearing my vampire teeth. I loved monsters and considered humans bad. I was fascinated as a child by military bands, machine noises and Kraftwerk which was to lead to an interest in Industrial music as an adult. I am in my 30's and I am still heavily into the Gothic subculture(although I still find being part of a subculture socially challenging). I have no intentions of growing up.

My psychologist told me that a lot of her Aspie clients wear mainly black. Secondly several Goths in my local scene have told me they have Aspergers Syndrome and thought I had it too. Do you think 'Gothickness" could be genetic and/or Aspie trait?

Grrrr!

Humans ARE bad. Is your name not that of the Ancient Babylonian mother of gods and monsters? My hair is naturally dark. I am obsessed with the Master from Doctor Who. Are Christians allowed?

If they aren't, I just got kicked out.

I think you can be Christian and goth. Christianity has a lot of very dark and beautiful aspects to it.

Fun!

I have heard of the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard; what little I have read about his ideas has intrigued me.

Are there any fans of Professor Severus Snape here?

Has anyone here read Victor Marie Hugo's Notredame de Paris or his Les Miserables?

If so, what do people think of the respective characters Dom Claude Frollo and Inspector Javert?

Only recently have I started calling myself a goth, but it isn't as much of a subculture thing as a general aesthetic/worldview. I am friends with one other girl who is sorta-goth, but I've never heard her say the word. I've never been to a goth club, am fairly religious, do not participate in BDSM or any other type of sexual activity, and don't do a lot of things that goths are "supposed" to do. I am interested in the subculture, but more, I think, as a result of my interest in the older stuff. I'm afraid, based on what CP said, that I will find it shallower than I hoped.

I mentioned before that I was a Goth of the '80's. Many of the goths I knew were very reserved and in many ways very conservative. I find it odd that you think that there is any sexual difference with goths. It's inconsistent with my experience, anyway. Maybe that reputation came about later.

The BDSM thing is more of an impression that V has gotten, I think, and he definitely knows more about what is going on in the subculture today than I do. I've read a couple of lists of incorrect assumptions that people tend to make about goths, and one of them is that they are all homosexual. I find this very odd.

Speaking of which, where is V?

This is the reason why I think people under 18 shouldn't be allowed on the internet.

I'm a Goth, but only on the inside. I have to look "normal" to keep my job, pay the bills. I refuse to uphold the "Gothic" lifestyle on appearance only.

PS if you are of German descent you are Goth by default. "The Goths. Originally, the ethnonym of a group of East Germanic tribes."

Oh yes it does; the Scriptures have a light and dark thread tightly wound as a double helix running through the whole of human history!

You realise that thanks to the Visigoths and Vandals, and to the Moors having a bit of a predilection for blonde brides and concubines, at one time in history there were a substantial number of Blonde, Islamic, Gothic, Spaniards? This is closest I get to politically incorrect humour.

What is with the fixation of some of my fellow males with flaxen locks anyway? Other than so called strawberry blonde, or red-gold (especially with green eyes) as I prefer to call it, it is not nearly as attractive a look as auburn or brunette or raven-dark (whether with olive skin and brown or black oval or almond-shaped eyes, very dark dark skin or pale skin and blue eyes.

Yes, it is not so much that I am less shallow than other males of my age, rather that I am potentially more fickle; that is why I have more or less voluntarily submitted to a prolonged sentence of passionate celibacy. On the bright side, unbound by either monastic or matrimonial vows (both of which I consider to be binding and solemn matters) I remain at present free to choose!

Do not mock; he may be needed for the Alliance. I was a fifteen year old who hated the mainstream too once; now I seek help in redeeming it from within.

Gothic is totally different from religion, so you can be goth in combination with any religion. There are many gothic christians and also some goth muslims and goth jews. The subculture has no particular stand on religion, so basically you can practice any religion combined with participation in the goth subculture.
