Queensryche, "Della Brown", Empire:

You've got a cardboard house,
Live there all the time,
Keep your memories tied with string
The face that many once adored,
twenty years gone, maybe more,
Somewhere you lost your dream.
Mama watched your every move,
but now you're all alone,
Yeah, she's been gone for awhile.
Daddy left some time ago -
fading years pass too slow -
He's the only one, could make you smile...

--oh, you're still crying--

Big city bound,
Gonna make your mark.
Read your name in the lights.
All the ads and people say
beauty lets you get your way,
Tried your best to prove them right.
But living on the streets ain't bad,
sad people make you glad -
Pardon me, could you spare some change?

--oh, you're still crying--

Street corner girl,
Watch the crowd go by,
fill your tin can with life.
Summer days tend to slip away,
like your men you couldn't make them stay -
Hard to choose, whiskey or a wife.
Sometimes you wonder where's the end,
Where you goin', where you been?
Happiness seems so hard to win.
Most never care to find,
Della Brown sees it all the time.
Looking for that man
to make her smile again...

--oh, you're still crying--

I am emotionally constipated but this is enough to make me flip wilfully over the precipice

If that is not ridiculously sad I don’t know what is.

Going with the jazz theme, I always found Black and Blue by Andy Razaf and Fats Waller has a really sad, lonely undercurrent. Of course it is Satchmo that really made it work. He didn't quite master it first time though. Here is an early version:

Can't really blame him for that twenties backing.

This is closer to what I like:

I got an even better version than that where he is really powering on the second trumpet solo, undulating like a man possessed.

Elton John - Empty Garden (Hey, Hey Johnny)

What happened here
As the New York sunset disappeared
I found an empty garden among the flagstones there
Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And now it all looks strange
It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain

And what's it for
This little empty garden by the brownstone door
And in the cracks along the sidewalk nothing grows no more
Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And we are so amazed we're crippled and we're dazed
A gardener like that one no one can replace

And I've been knocking but no one answers
And I've been knocking most all the day
Oh and I've been calling oh hey hey Johnny
Can't you come out to play

And through their tears
Some say he farmed his best in younger years
But he'd have said that roots grow stronger if only he could hear
Who lived there
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
Now we pray for rain, and with every drop that falls
We hear, we hear your name

Johnny can't you come out to play in your empty garden

Justin Nozuka: Lullaby

Seriously this song squishes the man in me, I start sobbing and have to turn it off if anyone is around.
Its about mothers loosing their daughters,

Its acoustic.

this is a brilliant performance that is introduced by a lesser talent who does not understand her brilliance.
he takes 48 seconds to get his dumb spiel out, so watch after 48 seconds.

she wrote this herself, and it is raw and exceptional in deliberation and professionalism.

there is no resorting to "sexiness" to get her point accross as she is way more important a thinker than just a sexual entity with an attitude.

you should watch it all and it is very sad.

it is about a child who is 16 years old who is told to leave home by her selfish mother.
