Another oldschool banger that I'm stunned I forgot about.

Goldie has a pretty unique style I remember seeing his album Saturnz Return in a record store I frequent but I didn't listen to him at the time so I looked passed it and I missed out on getting another one of his albums for cheap. Do you know of any artist to similar to him at all it doesn't have have to be DnB exclusive either.

Anyway I was listening to Lamb. Another Trip Hop/Drum N Bass band. I really love the sound of Gorecki, God Bless and Gold. Even thought its hot the song Gold gives me the chills.

Talking about Saturnz Return, I didn't post it earlier but Mother is a bit over an hour and as far as I know he spent the better part of a year on it. Main reason I didn't post it before, aside from being an hour, is it can be a bit tough to make heads or tails of unless you're already familiar with things like Timeless, Sine Tempus, Journey Man, his Metalheadz work as Rufige Kru, etc.. It's about ten minutes of dnb (roughly 25 - 35 min in) book-ended with 25 minute orchestral intro and outro. Without saying it's a tune where he's unpacking and processing a lot of his life story up to his late 20's.




As far as anyone who sounds like Goldie, not that I can think of. There are other people who get as deep into their own sound but even with them, finding anyone whose quite like one or the other is difficult. I would say I'd highly recommend Dj Krust's late 90's work as there's a lot of depth in it (eg. True Stories, Future Unknown, Maintain, Soul In Motion, Going Nowhere, etc.).

Lamb and Portishead were introduced to me at a time when I had MTv Amp to show me a bit of these things occasionally and where if I wanted to inspect a sound more I had to gamble on buying a cd (Youtube, by comparison, is truly a miracle) and I think that might be part of why I didn't get into them a whole lot, similar story for Goldfrapp, and stuck mostly with Massive Attack. Technically I didn't even visit Morcheeba's music as much as I probably should have.

On a side note, through some interesting contingies, I've been going back through some of Tori Amos's early to mid 90's stuff and realizing that I really like her pianos and ep's. Her, and to some degree Fiona Apple, were playing with sounds that I'd say have some adjacency to trip hop however it was very cleverly dovetailed in piano jazz and folk.

Something that Mantra threw in at the end of her promo mix with Loxy maybe 8 months ago, telling the listeners on SoundCloud that it was an Es.tereo tune soon to be released, he took a minute on it but I'm stoked to see it out.Also I can see where releasing it on Samurai made a lot of sense, it's that kind of 'gray area' flavored tune:

Yeah, Group Four (on Mezzanine) with Liz is still a beast after all these years.

Another off dnb detour on the topic of trip hop, this is a tune that Sam Binga did on his Wasted Days album with Romaine, I don't know how I could classify Sam's work better than thinking of it like dubstep, dnb, and footwork-informed UK dancehall, and I think it's that dancehall aspect that makes it fit well into both a brief intermission about trip hop and a thread on dnb because the dnb aesthetic is there too (and plus, damn, it's just an incredibly touching song and video), and it's got some flavor similarities to something Massive Attack would do - especially thinking Ritual Spirit:

Liquid dnb treat from a guy... eh... just now trying the live stream thing to see if he can get the hang of it.

I think the trouble for me to cage it that way - I don't find aspiration fits well in the chill box, sort of like I wouldn't put Radiohead or Tool there even if they can write in soft pallets. The rest of the album's a bit too fast as well, ie. what I was mentioning where it seems like he's doing something like 140 bpm dancehall with footwork influence and faintly riffing on dubstep but departing too much from it to call it that (maybe think of Machinedrum but with more tropical percussion).

Definitely! Fabio's not one to shy away from the classics, especially when he was playing them out when they were brand new.
