Bolan at the height of his powers, Empire Pool, Wembley UK, March 1972. Telegram Sam was the last great T Rex single - the next one Metal Guru went straight to number one in June, but was very much a by-the-numbers affair, and didn't stay long in the charts.
Bolan went downhill quite quickly from here. Within 18 months he was physically almost unrecognizable from the way he appears here (drink and drugs), and his songs were pretty dire as well.

Livin' underground like a wild potato Don't go on the patio Beware of the pool Keep off the path Beware of the gate Watch out for the signs that say 'hidden driveways' Don't get the chlorine in your eyes It blinds you to the awful surprise

Someone's just uploaded this to YouTube within the last few hours. It's interesting as it was performed live for French TV at the Chateau d'Herouville near Paris (Elton John's Honky Chateau), and was essentially a rehearsal for the performance of the song at Wembley the following month.
Bolan's famous 'Larry The Lamb' singing voice wasn't really suited to live performances of heavier numbers like this, but it's still a terrific offering. He's looking very wild and haggard in the final half minute or so - I'm wondering if he'd been on the 'Bolivian Marching Powder', LOL.

Drank a lot of coffee today Got lost in the fray, I gave all I had for a time Then by some strange design I got a case of the empties The ruler of my world, a lost forgotten pearl When the fire leaves a girl Too burned to dry my life Living on a fault line
Didn't always do it right Might have left the heat on high Didn't know I had any left Thought I finally met my death Gonna do all I can Stay away from the quicksand
Nobody's gonna love you the same way Some of us go astray I walk so far from them all Instead of dropping the ball I seem to carry so many The colours don't align, a question of time I seem to lose what I find
Please give me a sign soon Really wanna find out the truth And then I just lay down and cry The waters don't really go by me Give me something I can see Something bigger and louder than the voices in me Something to believe

Just discovered this on YouTube about 30 minutes ago. The most powerful and gloriously raw version of 'Jeepster' I've ever heard, even better than the one from the 1972 Wembley concert. Bolan was actually probably at his peak in mid-late 1971 on this evidence.
