I can recall this being in the UK charts sometime around late 1971. It's always remained in my head, not sure why.

The DJ who introduces it is Ed Stewart, commonly known as 'Stewpot', LOL. Not sure why he's wearing that patch on his eye, never saw that before.

Fascinating as a piece of UK social history as well as for its musical content. Was this a tribute to the high point of 1970s trade union militancy, destined to be crushed a decade later by the government of Margaret Thatcher? Or was it a satire on that very same phenomenon? You'll still hear both views put forward today. There's a very brief intro by alleged paedophile Jimmy Savile, though the original version has a much longer take, which I've thankfully avoided here.
