Seasons change with the scenery
Weaving time in a tapestry
Won't you stop and remember me?

I don't know a soul who's not been battered
I don't have a friend who feels at ease

I'm watching quite a bit of early 1970s trashy music at present, and this one certainly fits the bill. It actually got very close to the top of the UK singles chart in the late summer-early autumn of 1972. Of interest also for its views of Brighton, in particular the West Pier (at around the 2 minute mark), which has long since collapsed into the sea.

The song is 'Seaside Shuffle' and the group is Terry Dactyl and the Dinosaurs.

Copywrite is vastly underrated.

Here's Tony Christie, looking like a bit of a cut-price Elvis, performing this minor hit song in front of what can only be a German audience. Christie was a Yorkshireman who came up via the working-men's clubs and briefly became a prominent figure on the British pop scene from about 1971-73. He then seems to have gone back to the club circuit. My parents went to see him perform in an obscure Manchester club circa 1975, and commented on his shabby appearance by that time.

He had a bit of a revival about 15 years ago, when one of his old songs was revived by another artist and went to the top of the charts.

Tony Christie again, performing Is This The Way To Amarillo, which was a hit for him in late 1971. The actual performance is in the BBC 'Top of the Pops' studio, but it's being shown here to a German audience via those TV monitors. Great song, actually. Who is this mysterious Maria, by the way?

Hunky Dory, great album, as were Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs. Not so sure about the stuff that followed those.... :?

Bowie had a hit single with Space Oddity in 1969, but his real breakthrough came with this performance on TOTP in June 1972:
