Rubber Soul is really their breakthrough album. They developed a more multidimensional style. The perfect in-between sound, between experimental and wacky later albums(magical mystery) and early more formulaic albums (please please me)
Yeah HELP is one of my favorites. And the first song to mark a change. I think it was the first song that wasn't a love-song.

McCartney is good when he's with the Beatles. I Like some of his Post Wings work. But Post beatles he just doesnt have the gravitas that Lennon provided.
I know Some people felt that McCartney was taking credit or downplaying Lennons contributions in his absence. Long standing controversy. I think Lennon is a better songwriter, Mccartney obviously more technically gifted.
McCartney does seem a bit insecure about his reputation, but he did help finesse many Lennon songs. The tape loops on "Tomorrow Never Knows" are him and George Martin, and he played the guitar solo on the track. The orchestra part and some of the lyrics on "A Day in the Life" are McCartney. He also slowed down "Come Together" to really make it work. He said when Lennon presented it, he played it just like the Chuck Berry song he took some of the lyrics from.
McCartney could play all of their instruments (and does play lead guitar and drums on some Beatles songs), so his role in the band can't be downplayed. Also, I think he interested ideas to drive their work, such as Sgt. Pepper, the whole Get Back film/recording project, etc. John seemed content to be a singer-songwriter. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Personally I love solo McCartney, then Lennon. And I really love Yoko's music. Her Plastic Ono Band and Fly are brutal, in the best way.
