Gustav Mahler by far, although technically he was more composer than musician.

Mahler is my favorite as well, with Jean Sibelius a close second. 8) For pop musicians, I would have to go with Richard Wright from Pink Floyd. I've always loved that raspy speak-singing voice of his, and the simple but instantly memorable keyboard melodies he wrote.

Are you ready for this?

Pete Quaife, the original Kinks bassist.

Klaus Nomi. I love his voice; I've never heard anything like it before. He probably would've been really famous if he hadn't died such a sad death just as his career was starting to take off.

I like Queen, and most of Queen was Freddie Mercury, and he's dead, so him.
And I like Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. He wrote Swan Lake, and I like the story of innocent Odette being corrupted by Odile, the black swan, and then drowing in a lake of tears with her lover prince at midnight.

I don't think anyone has mentioned two of my favorites yet:

John Denver and Dan Fogelberg

i've been collecting various odds and ends from all sources [phonograph recordings, cassettes, open reels, CDs, DATs, airchecks, mp3s] for the past 40 years or so. i have a room full of these things and at least one hard drive full of music also. my struggle has been to organize this stuff. i made some CDs for some other WPers of stuff of mine they expressed an interest in hearing. one of these CDs has the aforementioned john denver song, that i dubbed off of a mint-condition LP. since i was a teen, i've been listening [where i could] to the dr. demento show as well as a local program here called "music with mosqowitz" [long defunct] where i'd taped all the high points. so i have 3+decades of these airchecks that i'm going through right now.
