makelifehappen, I like the scrapbook art. All the textures, the overlapping of the paper, quite interesting to look over. Is that a special scrapbook, or do you do that for all the family pics?

Art is one of my fascinations, but I don't think I'd want to do it for a living.

Well, I got into scrapbooking because it was quite convenient, really. There is a massive scrapbooking store up the street, I have a million photo's taken over the years, I have kept just about anything I would have wanted for "keepsake" purposes and this is a good way to filter out all the extra's and make these memories last through generation after generation.

My 9 year old (AS), also does this with me, so it is nice to share in our special interests. We went to see Hilary Duff in concert and she was busy collecting the scrap glitter paper that flew over the crowd to add to the pictures in her scrapbook. It was quite cool.

She just had a social studies project worth 30% of the overall grade and it was supposed to be all about me. So, we did up a fantastic scrapbook (as a family effort) and answered all of the 41 questions, added pictures from all stages of life, old report cards, etc It is such an incredible book, but took alot of time and effort. Alot more than I am used to...really.

I generally rebel against any predetermined art project, expectations, etc. I do not work well with the pressure from external sources. I have the WORST time picking a theme and sticking to it, but I choose pictures at random and fit them into whatever I come up with in the moment. I offered to do my mothers wedding album 3 years ago and well, I still haven't completed it!

Just doesn't work like that for me.

I like the scrapbook page, makelifehappen! You are really creative with them! It's a bit like doing collage isn't it?
Scrapbooking is not quite so well-known over here and square format papers are not so easy to get but they have the albums/papers in the large craft shops and the papers are beautiful. You have a big scrapbooking store nearby? :D Hehehe, how do you keep out of there? lol.

It's such a nice way to keep photos and memories, and you can put in so much more than a photo album.

I didn't make the connection, but yes, it is close to collage, isn't it ???

Being that I've got a full time job with lots of travel, yeah, life does put a bit of a damper on things. That and the other thing as well, something changes a bit the day you realize that being famous would really suck, even if you could get yourself off the ground and have the world exposed to your works you wouldn't like all the responsibilities that encompasses as well as all the people you'd have to deal with let alone all the other crap that goes with that territory of really resigning your waking life to your art - it stops being you expressing something you've been dying to get out and becomes a job. For me I'd never want art to become a job or something I feel obligated to as a means of income.

So, life and economics bieng what they are, most people usually end up getting a regular 9 to 5 to fund their artistic hobbies, the 9 to 5 evenutally becomes more than 9 to 5, and by the time you throw a relationship, marriage, or kids into that its REALLY hard to find time for much of anything anymore. Being I'm almost 28 and still single, I'm not fully feeling that crunch yet but its starting to set in, that and when you realize that you yourself wouldn't fit into your own respective scene anymore, it really comes down to doing what you want only because you want to - you know that whole hot ideal of headlining a major event at 2 or 3 AM's kinda shot.

I once worked with a lady who was quite talented at drawing. She worked at this job, which was very boring, and spent most of her income buying collectible comic books. I encouraged her to draw her own comic, and try to get published. But she was very private, and wanted nothing to do with the business of being published, and attending comic conventions, and meeting with publishers, and having an agent, and so forth ...
Shame really, she could draw in that effortless way that floors you to watch ...

well...where to begin

Was in several bands over the decades, got out of the last one because it was a company band, and they terminated the guitar section (betcha never seen THAT happen...;) Play keyboards, bass, guitar, drums, a little sax and flute (or used to, had to sell the last 2), and mandolin.

Have a daughter and granddaughter underfoot, so the music side has pretty much gone into storage..:|

Now; as for wannabe art, one outlet is computer (3d) art. I've been doing that for about 6 years (coming up on it, in December). There's spendy programs, and free ones, so if you want to 'scratch the itch', but can't draw a straight line (like me..;), there's

Daz Studio (Daz3d.com) also characters (people) to add that are free from there as well. It's a little like playing with dolls, but that's not all it is.

Bryce 5, or 5.5 - landscapes and some modeling. They're by Daz, but I don't have a current link. I think that 5 is still free.

Gimp - poor man's Photoshop (free..dont' get cheaper than that..;) That sailboat pic could be done very quickly with it

Wings 3d - make models ,and use them in the other two. Also free, and easy to learn.

I could go on for quite a while (there's thousands of free art programs out there), but this is more than enough to get folks started. Here's a pic with Wings, and Poser (spendy, but there's older versions that may still be free)

That scarf is lovely...I could do with one like that today. It's cold here!

Knitters, can you help please? I've a friend who loves knitting and I've seen some packs of yarn I think she'll like for a Christmas present. I don't knit so I haven't a clue how many to get. There are 10x50g balls of yarn in a pack. Would that be enough for, say, a jumper?
