The Smiths: "How Soon Is Now". The ultimate aspie anthem.

I am the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and the heir of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth, how can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
just like everybody else does

Theres a club you would like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry and you want to die

I 100% agree with you!! ! There is no other song that I can completely identify with. I call "How Soon Is Now" my theme song. Also, John Lennon's songs How? and Look At Me are also aspie anthems. They both deal with isolation and questioning one's identity in the World. How? more specifically looks at love and the questions surrounding it.

I love 'I'm Still Here' from Disney's 'Treasure Planet':

I am a question to the world,
Not an answer to be heard.
All a moment that's held in your arms.
And what do you think you'd ever say?
I won't listen anyway…
You don't know me,
And I’ll never be what you want me to be.

And what do you think you'd understand?
I'm a boy, no, I'm a man..
You can take me and throw me away.
And how can you learn what's never shown?
Yeah, you stand here on your own.
They don't know me 'cause I'm not here.

And I want a moment to be real,
Wanna touch things I don't feel,
Wanna hold on and feel I belong.
And how can the world want me to change,
They’re the ones that stay the same.
The don’t know me,
'Cause I’m not here.

And you see the things they never see
All you wanted, I could be
Now you know me, and I'm not afraid
And I wanna tell you who I am
Can you help me be a man?
They can't break me
As long as I know who I am

And I want a moment to be real,
Wanna touch things I don't feel,
Wanna hold on and feel I belong.
And how can the world want me to change,
They’re the ones that stay the same.
They can’t see me,
But I’m still here.

They can’t tell me who to be,
‘Cause I’m not what they see.
And the world is still sleepin’,
While I keep on dreamin’ for me.
And their words are just whispers
And lies that I’ll never believe.

And I want a moment to be real,
Wanna touch things I don't feel,
Wanna hold on and feel I belong.
And how can they say I never change
They’re the ones that stay the same.
I’m the one now,
‘Cause I’m still here.

I’m the one,
‘Cause I’m still here.
I’m still here.
I’m still here.
I’m still here.

"Boulevard of Broken Dreams"--yep, that's me. "I Am A Rock" fits pretty well, too.

And, there's this:

"On The Outside" by Oingo Boingo

They laugh at me aloud
They say I'm just a clown
That I ain't got no pride
I'm on the outside
The girls look really cute
They really make it work
They think I'm just a jerk
I'm on the outside
I never could sit still
I never was too hip
I never caught the ride
I'm on the outside

I'm on the outside, I'm on the outside now
This is where it all begins right here
On the outside lookin' in, I'm on the outside

I never was a punk
I never shot junk
I never even tried counter
Culture passed me right by
(I'm on the outside)

Don't talk to debutantes
Don't eat in restaurants
The patrons sit and stare
The waiters make wise cracks behind my back
(I'm on the outside)

Teachers there in school
They flunked me by the rule
They say I had no motivation, brains or dedication
I guess the imbeciles were right I'm on the outside

I'm on the outside, I'm on the outside now
This is where it all begins on the outside looking in
Looking in
At you
I'm just an alien through and through
Tryin' to make believe I'm you
Tryin' to fit
Just a stranger on the outside looking in

The disco makes me sick I
Wear the wrong clothes
I say the wrong things
You know I can't dance
My feet are much too wide (I'm on the outside)

You think you set the trends
You wear your hair just right
Your clothes are out-a-sight
Your house is modern really kitch
You get so macho when you're with your b***h
(I'm on the outside)

I see them go to work
I see them go to sleep
I see them on T.V.
I see them laugh and cry
I'm on the outside. I'm on the outside. I'm on the outside

(Repeat chorus)

I'm on the outside. I'm on the outside now
I'm on the outside
I'm on the outside now

And also:

"Big Bad World One" by Jonathan Coulton

All alone by the table of food in my wrinkled suit and my borrowed tie
Only thinking of something to say in the moment after the girl walks by
Everyone else is having fun or else pretending to
I eat another crudite

I quit, I’m done
I don’t think it’s gonna work out OK
It’s no fair and it’s no fun
If every time it’s gonna end the same way:
Me zero
Big bad world one

At the office we’re all having cake cause it’s someone’s birthday I don’t know who
Get my plate and I’m scanning the room and the only seat is right next to you
I get the nod, the tiny smile that doesn’t come with teeth
Maybe you don’t know who I am

I quit, I’m done
I don’t think it’s gonna work out OK
It’s no fair and it’s no fun
If every time it’s gonna end the same way:
Me zero
Big bad world one

Staying inside lying in bed
Noticing something that’s not there
Follow my heart follow my head
I’ll follow anything that might get me somewhere

Catch her eye when she’s pouring my coffee and search my head for an opening line
But I see by the look on her face if I keep my mouth shut I’ll save some time
What if the best that I can be just isn’t good enough?
Isn’t it better not to know?

I quit, I’m done
I don’t think it’s gonna work out OK
It’s no fair and it’s no fun
If every time it’s gonna end the same way:
Me zero
Big bad world one

Horse With No Name by America

On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

Ive been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
cause there aint no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead

You see Ive been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
cause there aint no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

After nine days I let the horse run free
cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with its life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

You see Ive been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
cause there aint no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

I think that's an environmental lament, not a "refuge in the anti-social/socially awkward" type song that everyone else seems to be pointing out

Morrissey may or may not be Aspie (though I think he is), but I do NOT for a second think he's NT - maybe he's bipolar or something

"Behind Blue Eyes" by The Who DEFINITELY qualifies!! (a song about how one who might be all perky and fun on the outside has problems on the inside - that would describe me, at times, pretty well!)

"Loser" by Beck - IMO Beck IS an Aspie, for starters, the song makes absolutely no sense (but that's the POINT of it), and the "I'm a loser" part, whether taken comedically or seriously, seems to be the way a lot of the more self-conscious Aspies feel about themselves

"What I Am" by Edie Brickell - probably not the first song that would come to mind, but I think we're in need of more positive, celebratory anthems here, don't you?! Also the opening lines, "I'm not aware of too many things, I know what I know if you know what I mean"

"The History of Everything" by Barenaked Ladies - ummmm....how could I NOT mention the theme song to "The Big Bang Theory" in this discussion?!? I mean the show's about 4 guys who all seem at least a LITTLE "Aspie-centric" - I kinda think the same thing of BNL themselves, actually.

"Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus - it's right there in the title :P "Dirtbag", in this case, refers to being a dork/geek/nerd, as opposed to a sleazeball, like some might expect from reading the title

i was relistening to Neil Young's "Harvest" album after many years & i got caught on these lines & rembered how they had once struck me as so true:

"I fell in love with the actress.
She was playing a part
that I could understand." (from 'A Man Needs a Maid')

i think Young is NT but there were times he transmuted his loneliness so perfectly it works for AS even more.

If fear's what makes us decide,
Our future journey,
I'm not along for the ride,
'Cause I'm still yearning,
To try and touch the sun,
My fingers burning,
Before you're old you are young,
Yeah I'm still learning
[Chorus]
I am falling down,
Try and stop me,
It feels so good to hit the ground,
You can watch me,
Fall right on my face,
It's an uphill human race,
and I am falling down
I'm standing out in the street,
The earth is moving,
I feel it under my feet,
And I'm still proving,
That I can stand my ground,
And my feet are there, haven't washed my hair
To be lost before you are found,
Don't mean you are losing
[Chorus]
Some day I'll live in a house
Etc., etc., etc.
Don't you know that's not for now
and for now I'm falling
down...down...down...,
down...down...down,
down...down...down,
Yeah, Yeah..Yeah, Yeah,
[Chorus]
I'm falling down,
I'm falling down..I'm falling down...
I'm falling....

These are the lyrics to Salem's Suburbs by Project 86. I definitely feel it qualifies.

They put on disguises today
To hide the scarlet letters
That each of us has put so far away

In this which trial
Modern day

Despite this it seems that the powers be
Have decided who I am
And who I will be

Who I am who I'll be
Has been decided for me
And they don’t even know me

As they pounded in the stake
I thought I heard them say
“Become like us or you will be slain”

You can't tell me who I am

A song about a deviant individual ( not necessarily an aspie) who is ultimately accepted by the song's narrator.

The song is "Building a Mystery" by Sarah McLaughlin.
One line in the song makes it my anthem.

It takes careful listening but buried in the mix you can hear McLaughlin ( a lovely woman with a lovely voice) sing the refrain "you are so wonderful, you beautiful f****d up man".

That line alone should make the song the personal anthem of every heterosexual male aspie!

Oceanlab - On A Good Day

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBN4oUT9lAs[/youtube]

Little bit lost and...
A little bit lonely
Little bit cold here
A little bit feared

But I hold on
And I
Feel strong
And I
Know that I can

Getting used to it
Lit the fuse to it
Like to know who I am

Been talking to myself forever, yeah
And how I wish I knew me better, yeah
Still sitting on a shelf and never
Never seen the sun shine brighter
And it feels like me
On a good day

And it feels like me
On a good day

you see the world in black and white
no color no light
you think you'll never right
but you will, you might
sky could fall on me, could fall on me
the separation of the seas
but you mean more, mean more to me
than any color i can

This song made me cry - it felt as if Martin had addressed it to me!
