I'm quite new to this kind of thing, so I'd appreciate some details of what's expected. Is this strictly a mixing shoot-out where we only work with the layers we are given, or are we allowed to contribute our own material?

You know, this was really Moog's idea so I'll defer this one to him. My best guess would be 50% to 75% given samples but I'm curious to see what he's thinking.

Cool.

I checked out that youtube video, btw. I didn't really hear anything I didn't already kinda know, but he did bring up a good point I think is relevant to the discussion at hand. I would personally ask that, whatever the source material is that we have to use, all tracks are free of any processing--EQ, FX, and so on. I've ruined many a great composition of my own by relying on synth presets that were FX heavy and couldn't figure out why all my layers/parts were competing with each other.

I fully agree. Even if its a remix I prefer the stems to be sent dry, this way I can stack the mix the way I need to and if I'm putting more or fewer components in I can adjust the reverbs, EQs, etc. myself to make them fit.

You don't like samples, but this needs a break loop.

If by 'break' you mean amens that's not the direction I have in mind. I've clamped the bass kick down as well as some other sounds, this is really more the direction I want to take this track in:

It feels like it needs a loop to lift it. Also, that D:Bridge track has more variation with the kicks. Are you using Ableton? If so, experiment with percussion and the Grain Delay. You can achieve some interesting shuffle effects with that.

Yeah, I have no intentions of just leaving it that vanilla; it was more just an idea demo.

No worries, not a dig or anything. Just some stuff that sprang/sprung whatever to mind :)

BTW, did you see what me and Moog were talking about the last few pages? Let us know if you'd be up for brainstorming some stems for.... not so much a 'competition' in the classical sense but perhaps more a half-competition half-WP sonic art show.

Check this out. This has a loop throughout that's been put through a Grain Delay

Let me know if coming up with the stems would take the fun out of it. If so we could always just have maybe a handful of people provide four or five each and bring it down to a pool half that size just to get something that's both narrow and cohesive enough.

That is a sick tune and I like what they did, though I'm more apt to use it ambiently like the way Genotype did in this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvFBdN8qzrw

Its great for textures as well. For instance there was a sound that was really hot in deeper dark dnb where they'd have a a spraying sound that comes off a lot like the fizzing you get when someone opens a bottle of pop. I had that in a lot of my tracks for a while and grain delay w/ reverb on the right percussive instrument made it mouth-wateringly convincing.

If that's the same idea it might perhaps be more applicable, ie. he filled in the empty spaces on that percussive run. Things like that tend to work at dnb's speed better than peeling a loop off in 1/3 time.

BTW, on the stems another thing would do is have someone completely outside the whole thing drop them in as well. I know we've got various patrons here who are label signed, some are just singers but I'd like to think we have some signed beat-makers as well.

Whether we have someone inside or outside of the competition I think this would be a good set of criteria for the stems:

- unprocessed
- full length sounds
- stylistically open to almost any direction
