Whether we have someone inside or outside of the competition I think this would be a good set of criteria for the stems:

- unprocessed
- full length sounds
- stylistically open to almost any direction

Oneshots?

One shots for percussion, yes. Chords or arpeggio runs for instrument would be fine though.

I'd really like to make some under done jacking minimal sort House stuff with 808/909 percussion and mostly sample based sounds. Would that be OK?

Yeah, any genre or even nongenre is fine. We all have our own specialties and its better if we keep with them or at least explore what we know we can do well.

I love how Ableton lets you make percussion loops with old 808/909s and apply grooves from records or any audio source. I could do that all day.

Ahh, WP is back. Here's something I did last night, playing with some sounds and plugins. Trying to create a particular aesthetic. Got a bit of a massive attack vibe. I can't really hear it properly on my gear, can someone tell me how it sounds. 8)

It sounds like a good start. I'm not sure what I'd add just that if it were me I'd probably clamp down (compress) the 250-500hz a bit stronger.

Thanks, yeah, it's just a groove and then getting to the start of the tune proper.

Definitely some rogue elements peaking too heavily.

Is it too bassy or not bassy enough? I really can't hear jack on these things

Some material like that would be great as far as I'm concerned.

I like a bit of minimal techno myself, I'm just crap at making it. Also rubbish at drum and bass.

BTW, an update on what I've been working with:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/b7yb7s

No new sounds or changes to the structure, really just a lot of effort on using compression right. I shortened the kick, compressed it and the other elements pretty deeply, rolled back some of the wet where I felt it was overdone, and what seemed to make the most impact was using a muliband compressor on the lowpad, it occupies that 200 to 800hz area strong and I put the mid band (300 to 650hz) a fair amount lower than the low and high as well as clamped the low with a pretty good ratio.

As for new sounds I'm playing with some things from NI Massive's paper oscillator to make some hits as well as thunder (or very epic page-flipping) type sounds. Had to turn it off last night when I was finishing those so I didn't get too far with placing them. I do want to add some more melodic pads to be sub-outs for the main so it doesn't just loop through the whole song. Hopefully I'll have some luck but regardless I'll be taking my time on this one (and yes - use it as a bit of knowledge sharing as well as see if I can get any constructive critiques on what I've changed).

How do you get your kicks so clicky? I like that. I think you've taken a lot of bass off the bottom of the kick since the last bounce? Making room for a sub bass?

That descending synth run... I think it would be cool if it started slow and then sped up as it went on; quarter notes, then 8th, 16ths, 32nds etc.

I think I'd make your dry clap a bit shorter, a bit tighter.

Probably a lot less than you might think. I think without the compression it would sound pretty close to the way it did earlier.
I'm not at my home PC right now so I can't be prefecly exact but I had the same kick, added a compressor, dialed the threshold down pretty low, (somewhere in the upper twenties or lower thirties), I likely have something between 5:1 and 8:1 on it, can't remember the release length but I found that 3ms for attack works pretty well. If you start from there with a sub bass/808ish kick and then shorten it while under the compressor to sound like a regular kick you'll get something pretty similar. After that it may take some EQing but the thing I'm finding out that I like a lot about EQing post compression is that you get much more clear and noticeable results for your efforts.

On a bit of ADD, here's something I might buy myself as a present if I get some cash coming in. Might do it as a reward if I get something in particular done right this year. :)

Sounds nice that, Tech. Analogue but with a very modern edge on it.

I made another tune, I must be back into it... blame the lack of decent video games

Yeah, great sounds and possibly an even better filter; would be fun to loop my sounds out to it to liven em' up.

Sounds good, you're melodies are typically point on. Any story on the artist name?

That Arturia is sweet.

Well...I'm off to make some more sounds on my Obie. Over the last few weeks I've programmed 20 each of pads, ensembles, and comps. I'll be making some keyboard/plucked sounds before I'm off to having fun with filters and LFOs. If I get time this weekend I'll make a demo or two of what I'm doing at the moment. So much sound-making going on here, and I feel like I'm getting left behind!
