Todays music is just as good, but the thing is... For every great musician or band out there, there's probably over a thousand sh***y ones. It is hard to find great music these days that is made during these times, because there is so much awful music advertised on T.V., the internet, Radio and so on... Most of the good music gets overlooked by some soulless, lack of talent, just ok music, or trendy music ie, emo, fake hip hop, MTV (C)rap, nu-metal and a lot more that is big for younger people 14-18 and middle aged people who aren't exposed to much music, and that is generally the radio's, internet site's, or music channel's main type of viewer... This to me is what most popular or mainstream music is like, and the stuff that is in almost all pop stations/channels/webpages. I once thought all music made around this time sucked, but then I began digging, searching really hard for the good stuff and I finally found it. Good authentic music is just hard to find.

IMO, This is the worst decade in the history of music.

Why? Here's my theory:

* The parents of many of today's "musicians" grew up in or around the 1970s

* Everybody hates the music their parents love, and vice-versa.

* Their parents appreciated the great music of the '70s.

* Therefore, they have grown to appreciate the complete opposite of great music.

I tried to like today's music, but I found I was only trying to follow everyone else so I could fit in. Now I find it's not worth it, and stay with my rock music from before I was born. What I hate about today's music is that the radio station I used to listen to in the mornings will now play nothing but that, and because it sounds the same, same sounds that are made by computers, same kind of voices.

I have to say that a lot of the music I hear on the radio today doesn't really do it for me so I tend to stick with music I listened to as a teenager (1990s) or 60s / 70s stuff. However, I try to stop myself from sounding like my Dad in those days and going, "That isn't music at all!" :)

It's probably unfair to say that music today isn't as good as it used to be - it's just different and will probably appeal to people who are younger and more exposed to the "scene" (anybody here remember the Grunge look in the early 90s?) prevalent at the current time rather than older people who miss out on that all important context. Music tends to be more down to personal taste than anything else in my experience.

http://www.last.fm can give you good recommendations if you tell it what you like. I've found a lot of new stuff.

One of the question I have had these days has had less to do with the quality of music and more to do with why, here in the USA, our big labels are so regressive and allergic to forward thinking stuff. They were right on top of it in the 90's, nowadays it seems like while we do have talent here to rival a lot of European talent; they go to the UK or Europe or make it big there but they only get so much support from our side of the Atlantic.

Well that's your problem, you're relying on the radio to inform you of whats out there today.

The Horrors are the best band I've heard in YEARS, I like them better than my favourite 00s bands, so NO.

Most of todays mainstream music is absolute crap. Many bands of today that are considered indie, punk and folk are brilliant.

You now have the internet so major labels are not as important as they were 15 years ago.
There will always be musical talent which means that there will always be good music. It may be hard for the musical talent of today to get the recognition that they deserve.
Most of the very talented bands of today come from the U.K.. If you think that todays music is horrible then blame the U.S. record labels not the artists.

I personally favor the artists that came form another decade and are still recording music today.
That is true talent.

I remember people referring to the 90's as the worst time ever for music.

there aren't as many funny novelty songs coming out these days, as there was a decade ago or so.

Exactly, nothing else matters to me if my favourite artist keeps releasing music. :)

Most of today's music is a listen and throw away kind of music that doesn't give a lasting impression. Or maybe there's a lack of music that isn't.

Today's music is terrible because there can be only one American Idol which makes the rest of us losers.
