I often get dislikes on Youtube for taking a cover and adding my own style to it. Is this more for full bands to do?

Don't worry about it. :) Do what you want to do. If there are some highly critical people there will also be some highly respectful people too.
Have good day. :)

I think I would rather hear a radically different style. If you were just doing it verbatim, it would just be better to listen to the original.

Perhaps the covers could be poorly recorded sound-wise and could use some eq or noise reduction?

Or maybe they don't like your appearance?

Or maybe they want their music to be unaltered (no style change)?

Or maybe they think you're just s**t at it?

I've never seen your videos so I can't judge.

I have heard some really nice covers on YouTube. One of the best was First Aid Kit covering the Fleet Foxes' "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song".

Maybe Uprising, people criticize some really stupid crap.

Agreed scizoid26.

Here's a song i had to put as unlisted from douchey messages because of it. I think I did a good job with it...20 minutes ranging my entire style Apparently you can't touch Opeth without people getting mad.

Last 3 minutes are an entirely different style involving djent polyrhythms.

Generally people on Youtube are douchebags. Not all, of course. But most of them. And it's those comment that you really notice.

It could also be partly because people want over-produced crap that follows a narrow standard. So when something differs from that, people automatically start hating it. Just a theory of mine.

As with any social networking site, youtube has a specific culture. This culture includes unfairly dumping on things individual people do not like, telling people they have deemed uncool to kill themselves, and general asshattery.

I wouldn't let the above mentioned get to you. You can do one of three things

1) Disable comments
2) approve each comment
3) just ignore the haters and keep on doing what you're doing.

Of course, there is one more option, and that's to allow the as*holes to dictate what you allow viewable to the general public. I find this to be the least desirable, as you are not being yourself.

Very true..and thank you for sharing that comment, it is very accurate!

Tea, that could work...just disable ratings and have comments that need pended approval?

I personally think I did a great job on Black Rose Immortal given that it's 20 damn minutes long.

I did what I said I would, but I am curious here...what if I just renamed the video titles from "covers" to "bass remake"? It is tedious, but it could clear up any confusion.

I make music for myself but figure it should be shared with people.

Keep doing it. I like messing with covers to make them sound unique, and that's what makes a real musician stand out: the ever-flowing creativity. Granted, some covers I do kind of suck and they don't go as well as I'd hoped, but it's the first step in originality. You can take something that's already out there and do it differently. Don't let internet trolls mess with you.

I enjoy the song you linked to, but my lack of musical upbringing doesn't leave me with the ability to assess the quality of your cover. I can say I have seen rather original (not copying the original) covers of Opeth on YouTube (the originality is more transparent to me when it's singing, because I do like singing myself) and the response to some of them has been very warm. Perhaps you could wait for more exposure or advertise/promote yourself to get other people to comment upon it?

I can only imagine when I start putting guitar riffs to songs now...I made a Lamb of God style to the riffs in Bush's Little Things. Bet that will piss off a few people.

I don't have to worry about comments now, I can filter out stupid ones now.

Also, my first guitar cover will be Wax Ecstatic by Sponge. Should be fun! (Note: not changing anything except for putting it in C)
