I find myself listening to music that's never in the mainstream nor all that popular.

Most music I like ranges dramatically but most of the styles are old.

I was wondering if anyone else fitting this pattern. I just think it's strange and I really don't know why I lean more toward the old than the new. If you look at my webpage in youtube favorites, you'll see what I mean.

I think people that like whatever is popular on the radio and only that don´t really like music. That and most popular music is really bad, made to just appeal to a certain audience. Listen to whatever you enjoy.

Could there be a factor where a lot popular music is made to similar 'templates' in order to be marketable in mass?

Then there is the thing where it seems a good portion of music with lyrics which is made these days is produced to where it is difficult to hear lyrics among the music since they are at same levels.

This is my favorite radio station here http://www.krli.net/ True, a lot of it was 'popular music' in its time, even into 1970s: yet it was produced rather differently than now.

A favorite group, from several years ago, is Lone Justice.

Also really like the Hawaiian music genre - can't understand a word of Hawaiian - but the sound appeals.

I seem to be stuck in the late 60s-early80s-ish time for music. I also have a thing for black and white 1920s-40s photos.

My music collection is primarily of classic rock and 70s-80s era classic metal, and ranges from 1955-1995 and a little after. My post on the classic rock forum tells it all.

Wow...something that MissConstrue and I actually have in common! lol jk. The music I listen to is either not on the radio, or if it is, it's played a couple of times and then, that's it; it disappears like Charbydis! (it might re-appear on an obsure site or station years later?). Let's face it; I'm not really into manufactured crap pop (where they use auto tune so much that you have no idea what the singer sounds like in real life), everything is in 4/4, and...well, I can go on and on, but to save boredom, I will not. Can't we just have music that challenges the mind a little? Or takes us away to temporary bliss for a few minutes emotionally? grr!! !

I can enjoy almost any type of music (even some country and rap) but I really have a hard time with almost all the new mainstream music. Some exceptions of course... like System of a Down and Rise Against . The one type of music I really can't stand is the club/hip hop type of music that plays on the 24/7 on the radio around here.

I think the reason I posted the music charts thread is because my tastes are so far from the mainstream that it was my only outlet. I was never able to talk about music I liked with anyone they would just say that sucks or I've never heard it.

I dislike most mainstream music and just about anything outside of rock and metal. What I really like are bands such as Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost, Morbid Angel, Death, Autopsy, etc. which are death/black metal bands. I also like the classic rock like Black Sabbath, Rush, Led Zepplin, Judas Priest, etc.

Yes, I like most kinds of metal except for any fake metal genres like "nu-metal" or "metalcore". I hate bands like Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Suicide Silence, SOAD, Avenged Sevenfold, etc. which make mediocre music that appeals to the masses of brainless emo kids who loves to think that they are "metal"... Oh and let's not forget to mention Marilyn Manson, who just plain sucks. Sorry, but that's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it!

I like indie music as well, but I also like the mainstream stuff as well.

I tend to gravitate towards music with fast beat, complicated drumming patterns, and minor keys...why, I dunno..;)

Lately (thanks to you guys), I've discovered Collide, Ariya, Secret Meeting, Boards of Canada,
Evanescence, Nightwish, and Tapping the Vein. I don't want to be the old fogie who complains how much better Zeppelin was...;)

I don't have top 40 taste in music. My taste runs more to classical, techno, ambient, and world.

My taste is so "non-current" that I mainly listen to music at least 40 years old, and most of it is at least 100 years old.

Compared to most posts so far you are all into mainstream music compared with my tastes.

I like weird bubblegum pop, eurodance & more recently, anime music (more specifically Sailor Moon). Oh yeah, I sure like the unpopular stuff. Plus, rap, hiphop or whatever kids listen to these days hurts my ears. Actually don't hate me, but I strongly dislike mainstream crap. Like eating disgusting vegetables such as asparagus.

Could not agree more with what you said.
