It's something that's been on my mind and am unsure if I want to proceed with it.

Basically the plot is of a teen with Asperger's. He's been raised by a foster family ever since being taken away from his father during his childhood. Suddenly he's gone, and nobody's understood why. A friend of his follows him secretly, giving the searchers tips on where he could be heading. But after she (the friend) observes his personal life and why he hit the road, she betrays her original operation and discovers what he had experienced, the truth about his father, what caused their separation, and finds herself joining him on his run.

It could fly.

Might want to think about what to say to people who ask, is he only running from - or is there something he is running to?

It could be something which starts out as merely running from, but develops into something he is traveling to.
That would be interesting to let the readers figure out as the character himself does: work in hints that readers might use to try to figure it out and see if they turn up right about it.

go for it! I like the idea of more foods where the character is autistic.

I have written both creative non-fiction and fiction. I have some ideas, you may use - I assume you want this book published.

Enlist in a creative writing course to learn the craft. It is better than having to learn everything on your own. Consider to write biographical or creative non-fiction instead of fiction. Fiction may be difficult as an asperger, if you find it hard to imagine people's feelings and motivations.

Think about your target audience. It is probably easier to write about teenagers to adults than to write to teenagers.

You have an unusual plot, and it may turn into a good book. However, you will have to think about an ending that makes it worth reading it, and that gives your plot meaning.

Finally, it increases the chances of succes, if the book takes place in a New York or some sort of glamorous environment, that people like to read about.

Good luck from engineer

I agree with engineer, learn the craft. Most published writers are well educated and know how to research details. Once you have written more than half, a local writers club might be useful for critiquing your work (just have a think skin, some are bitter their work is not selling as good as they want and take it out on others)

You could also consider making it a short story to get your feet wet and get your name out in the market.

Also find other books that have an asperger main character. "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night", is one good example.
